Welcome to the
Trempealeau County WIGenWeb Project! Within these pages you will find many of
the items that have been shared here since the beginning of this web site way
back in October 2000. All pages have been revamped to a new look...one that is
hoped to be pleasing to the eye, yet providing ease of use, as well as easy
reading that is necessary after long hours of internet research.
Trempealeau County is rich in historical collections that have been published
over many years. Many of these "histories" have (or will be) provided here for
you to peruse. There are extensive materials to be found in our
"archives," as well as many illustrations of Trempealeau County life in our
"photo album." You will find our "search" engine link at the top of every page
to help you quickly pinpoint the materials you are in need of.
Please consider contributing your pieces of Trempealeau county family history. Corrections, updates, and additions to this site are always welcome. Our combined efforts can make this a great site for all who visit!

Trempealeau County, Wisconsin has been described as "a region of lovely
valleys and wooded hills." It seemed to some of the pioneers who first settled
here to be a "Garden of Eden." So much so, in fact, that a book titled as such
was written by Rev. D. O. Van Slyke of Galesville in 1886, stating that it was
"Found at last: the veritable Garden of Eden, or a place that answers the Bible
description of that notable spot better than anything yet discovered." Further
early descriptions of the county include, "charmed with wild grandeur," and
"undeveloped lavish wealth." The undulating plains or prairies, the precipitous
bluffs and ridges, the deeply cut valleys and coulees, give to Trempealeau
County an unusual picturesqueness. Trempealeau County is, indeed, a beautiful
area with unique features not to be found elsewhere.
The people of
Trempealeau County take pride in the prevalence of the twin traits of generosity
and hospitality. The frontier times of Trempealeau County were considered to be
a contributing factor to the development of fine human beings, people with
confidence in themselves. People are described as being well endowed with
energy and perseverance. They are said to have "health, long life, purpose in
living, the quickening of mental faculties." All of these characteristics, along
with the variety of experience, compensated for the deprivation and rough going
that these hardy people had to face. The pioneer found life more worth living
than his fellows who stayed in the East. This quality of character is evidenced
in many of the historical articles and biographies that you will find within the
pages of this web site. You are invited to come and explore our past and its
people via this web site.
This web site is based on volunteerism and is
affiliated with the USGenWeb and the WIGenWeb (see the "about us" link to learn
more!). The intent in coordinating this web site is to put as many resources
online as possible for you to discover for yourself. Therefore, it is hoped
that this web site will become a tool that will be helpful to your Trempealeau
Co. research.
We thank each of our volunteers and previous County Coordinators that have made this site what it is today!
