Sister Mary Madeleva C.S.C.

"Sister Mary Madeleva C.S.C., was born in Cumberland on May 24, 1887, the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. August Wolff. She graduated from Cumberland High School in 1904, attended the
University of Wisconsin 1905-06, and then went to St. Mary's College, Notre Dame. She
graduated in 1909, and entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross."

She began her career as an author in 1923 with the publishing of her first book, "Knight Errant
and Other Poems". Seventeen other books followed, including "My First Seventy Years",
where she reminisced about her early life in the city.

She became president of St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana, in 1934, and held that post
for 27 years until her retirement in 1961.

Sister Madeleva was recognized internationally as a poet and scholar of distinction. She died
in July of 1964.
