1898 Fire
THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS WORTH OF PROPERTY DESTROYED: TWO HUNDRED FAMILIES HOMELESS.
A fire,
generally believed to have originated from sparks from an engine at the
lumber yard in
East
Cumberland, swept the southwest side of the city. Hundreds of families
were left
homeless
and destitute in the city.
Citizens
fought bravely to save their homes and property and many of them were fatally
burned.
Many
women and children were taken by freight train to Shell Lake.
The dry,
hot, autumn weather was most favorable for the spread of the fire and only
by the God
send
of a rain storm was the fire extinguished.
Loss
in the city was estimated at $180,000 with about $59,000 insurance. The
principal loss
was
to the Beaver Dam Lumber Company. (October 6, 1898).
