Jeffery Business Block Burns Sunday Night
LOSS $100,000
December
11, 1924--A fire, the like of which Cumberland has not seen in many a day,
took
place
about one o'clock, when the Jeffery Block with practically all its contents
burned to the
ground.
The tragic
death of Mrs. George Gaerth
which took place during the fire from heart failure as a
result
of the shock, cast a gloom over the entire city.
The cause
of the fire is still unknown, but it was thought the fire started in the
walls from
wiring.
The building was a two story brick structure, was built in 1916 by W.C.
Jeffery and
probably
could not be replaced today for $25,000.
