Early Disasters

BARRONETT, GRANITE LAKE AND COMSTOCK COMPLETELY WIPED OUT OF EXISTENCE BY FIRE.

September 6, 1894--Last Saturday and Sunday go on record as the blackest day on the pages of
northern Wisconsin's history. Barronett, a town of 500 inhabitants, eight miles north of here,
Granite Lake, a small hamlet four miles north of here and Comstock, another town five miles
south are all in ashes, only three small houses out of 60 remain in Barronett and none at the
other places.

A cyclone of whirling fire swept down upon the northern cities from the south. The fire swept
as far north as Shell Lake.

Total loss estimated at $400,000.
