Reminiscences From Swedish History
Gypsies
Do you
remember when gypsies would come into town in their covered wagons? They
usually
camped
at the edge of town. When word got around that they had arrived, frightened
children
would
run and hide and everyone was on the alert as they were not to be trusted.
In the early
days
they usually had extra horses tied behind their wagons. The gypsy men were
horse traders
and
would try to fleece those that they were dealing with. The women and men
too would
scatter
through the stores and many articles would disappear into their pockets.
In later years
they
traveled in large cars. Communications were better then and one town would
notify
another
and they were sent out of the territory. It has been many years since we
have heard of
or seen
gypsies. They were definitely a part of the early days.
