PART THREE
History Through Quotations and Reminiscences
The Rice Bed in Beaver Dam Lake
"The
Rice Bed' is a misnomer, for there is no rice
growing there. Between Eagle Point
and what used to be called Ferguson's Point
is a submerged island covered by a foot or two of water. During the low
water of the 1930s it was a real island. In this shallow water is a heavy
growth of rushes that someone, in bygone days, mistook for wild rice and
it has been known as
The
Rice Bed ever since. Being a good designation for a land mark I hope it
will always be called that. Several attempts have been made to get rice
started in Beaver Dam Lake without success. The reason seems to be that
a rice lake requires an inlet and an outlet. We have an outlet in Hay River
but no inlet so do not have the necessary current.
