Church of God In Christ (Mennonite)
The origin of our church in Wisconsin dates back to the summer of 1953. It was through an advertisement the Mennonite people living in Michigan learned of available farmland at reasonable prices in Barron County. After investigation four families of our faith moved here. Russel Wilsons, Edward Friesens, Willis Koehns and Orville Friesens were the first.
Sunday was spent meeting in a home for Sunday School and singing. More families of our denomination moved to this area from Michigan, Kansas and North Dakota. In 1957 services were held in a small, rented building in Almena, and the fellowship was enjoyed by all.
As more families heard of the opportunities here, and decided to join this small congregation, we purchased a brick school house (Collingwood) southeast of Cumberland for services.
A guest minister filled the pulpit when possible. It was a joy and blessing to have Brother Earvey Ensz from Oregon, elected and ordained to the ministry in 1961.
We felt the time had come for
a permanent and centralized place of worship. A new frame building was
constructed five and one half miles south of Cumberland on county highway
P. Dedication services were held on Easter Sunday, 1963. In 1967 the building
was enlarged and remodeled. Families continued to move here from throughout
the United States and Canada.
There now is a seating capacity
of two hundred eighty.
We have enjoyed a growing church, as many young people grew up and accepted Christ as their Saviour...there were marriages......and.....births.
In 1972, due to crowded conditions, and a number of people living in the Barron area, a sister Congregation was formed. A building was erected north of Barron on highway 25. Minister Newell Mininger is pastor of this group.
Our membership here is 135 and a Sunday School enrollment of 185. We have well attended Sunday morning and evening services. Wednesday evening Bible Studies. Visitors are always welcome to worship with us. We have an active Youth Group, Ladies Sewing Circle, and Summer Bible School is held each year.
We have shared joys and also
sorrows through the years. The Lord has richly blessed us during the past.
May He be with us in the future as we venture on holding to His hand.
