History of Augustana Lutheran Church

The Swedish Lutheran Church of Cumberland was organized April 19, 1885, by Pastor Joseph Frodeen of Chisago City, Minnesota. The charter members of the congregation were: Carl Nelson and wife, C.A. Larson and wife, Frank Anderson and wife, Albert Johnson and wife, Johan Hegg and wife, Isak Anderson, Hugo Ostram and wife, Mrs. Camelia Griswold, L.A.
Larson and wife, Enock Lundberg, John Johnson and wife, Andrew Anderson, C.M. Dahl and wife and David Johnson.

On March 16, 1887, the members of the Swedish and Norwegian Congregations met to discuss the building of the church together. The church built in 1887 was used jointly for 20 years. This church is now the Baptist church. The new church built in 1907, the present Augustana, has had many improvements of the past years, including surfacing the church exterior, removing the steeple, rebuilding part of tower, redecorating church parlors and installing carpeting. The recent parsonage was built in 1918.

Our pastors served 3 congregations, Ebenezer in rural Almena, Trinity of Lorain and Augustana of Cumberland. In 1954 the parish was divided, Cumberland deciding to go it alone.

The following pastors served the congregation: J.J. Frodeen, (1885 organizer); J.D. Nelsenius (1887-1889); Anders Bengstron (1890-1896); A.J. Malmquist (1896-1903); E. Edman (1903-1909); A.G. Hammerberg (1911-1913); S.D. Hawkins (1915-1917); G.E. Lindsten (1917-1922); A. Harry Ericson (1923-1928); O.W. Ohlson (1929-1949); W. Burdette Benson
(1949-1955); E.H. Baker (1955-1968); and H.H. Hanson (1968-).

Sons and daughters of the congregation who have gone into service of the church are: Otto A. Olson, Jr., Central Canadian Synod; C.Walden Hedman, Teacher at LBI, Seattle, Washington. (formerly Missionary to Africa); David Nystrom, Pastor at McCool Junction, Nebraska; Elaine Gonske, former missionary to Africa; Alice Olson, former parish worker at Forest Lake,
Minnesota; Mary Ann Prell, returned missionary from Pakistan and David Baker, Pastor at Corvalia, Oregon.

SUNDAY SCHOOLS

The Sunday School was in existence before the congregation was organized. One of the most faithful of the superintendents of the Sunday School was Claus Carlson, who severed for many (25) years. He also served as secretary of the congregation for about the same length of time.
