Toftness Chiropractic Clinic
Dr. I.N. Toftness opened his chiropractic office in Cumberland October 10, 1932, taking over Dr. E.L. Berglund's practice. Dr. Berglund had been in Cumberland for eight years.
The office was located on the second floor of the K.T. Building owned by Lew Thomas, proprietor of the Cumberland Hotel. The building was at the corner of Grove and Second Avenue, the present location of Erickson's Holiday gas station.
The frame building was not insulated so it meant getting the fires started before the office was opened for the patients each morning. Two rooms were occupied by the chiropractic office and each room was heated by a wood stove. Two years later another room was added and, again, another wood stove was set up for comfort.
In 1937 the office was moved to the ground floor of the Zimmerman building to newly decorated, fluorescent lighted, steam heated accommodations. Dr. Gordon Toftness joined the staff in August of that year.
In July 1948 construction of the Toftness Chiropractic Clinic was begun by Birger Johnson and Sons on the purchased lot of the Company Store and Mrs. Fred Miller's property south of the Tower House on Second Avenue. A spacious, modern building, having the reputation of the larger and finest chiropractic building in the state at that time, was erected.
March 29, 1949 the doors were opened to the public for the grand opening. This building, dedicated to chiropractic, is known nationally and internationally to patients who come from many states in the Union.
Dr. "I.N.", as he is frequently called, has dedicated his life to research in chiropractic. The awards and trophies he has won for outstanding contributions to the profession on state and national levels has attracted over 500 chiropractors from most of the states, as well as nine foreign countries, to come to Cumberland to attend seminars at the Toftness Post Graduate School of Chiropractic, Inc..
In April 1974 a new addition to the clinic was started to give the needed facilities of three adjusting rooms and a chemical laboratory on the main floor and enlargement of the conference room on the lower level.
June 14, 1974, Dr. James Toftness, graduate of the University of Wisconsin at River Falls and the Northwestern College of Chiropractic, Minneapolis, Minnesota, joined the staff. He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Gordon Toftness.
It is interesting to note that
prior to Dr. Berglund's practice there were only two other chiropractors
who preceded him in the Cumberland area, giving the city the services of
a chiropractor for the past 55 years.
