100 Years of Medical and Health Care
Physicians--
1874-1880--none.
1880--Dr. William B. Hopkins was the first doctor to practice medicine in Cumberland and, at that time, the only physician between Clear Lake and Superior. In 1906 he founded a tuberculosis sanatorium in Northern Wisconsin. He continued his dedicated services until his death in 1918 at the age of 63.
1881--Dr. W.C. Pease came to Wisconsin in connection with the railroad and stayed in Cumberland to practice medicine until his death in 1900.
1890--Dr. Issac G. Babcock began his 30 year medical practice. He is credited with performing the first appendectomy in Barron County.
1908--Dr. G.A. Grinde came to Cumberland and maintained a continuous 28 year practice of medicine.
1916--Dr. G.A. Grinde established a 10 bed hospital in Cumberland in the former William Fuller residence.
1918--In two years time Cumberland had outgrown the 10 bed hospital so the former Olcott residence was purchased and converted to a 22 bed hospital with all the currently modern equipment.
1921--Dr. S.O. Lund joined the medical staff and practiced until his death in 1962.
1931--Dr. R.C. Thompson began his medical practice in Cumberland and continued until he became ill in 1956.
1947-1973--During this period the following physicians joined the Clinic staff and are currently practicing medicine in Cumberland: Dr. R.E. Lund, Dr. R.M. Anderson, Dr. H.O. Jirsa, Dr. D.E Riemer and Dr. G.M. Goza. Two other doctors spent approximately two years in Cumberland: Dr. A. Thorsness, Dr. Louis Pfeiffer and Dr. William Houlton.
1974--Five physicians built a new clinic adjacent to the hospital. The staff includes three General Practitioners, one Internist and one Surgeon. They are Dr. R.E. Lund, Dr. D.E. Riemer, Dr. R.M. Anderson, Dr. G.M. Goza and Dr. H.O. Jirsa.
Dentists--
1882--Dr. C.E. Fotte is believed to have been the first dentist in Cumberland and remained here 27 years.
1903-1973--During the next 70 years the following men provided dental care for the community: Dr. W.N. Hedback, Dr. Frank Hocum, Dr. Dahle, Dr. G.H. Babcock, Dr. F.S. Waite, Dr. S.A. Algeo, Dr. J.L. Wykhuis, Dr. Donald Cramer and Dr. G.C. Tempesta.
1974--The dentists currently practicing in Cumberland are: Dr. John B. Draves, Dr. Gerald C. Tempesta and Dr. James L. Wykhuis.
Hospitals and Health Care Centers--
1974--The new Cumberland Memorial
Hospital was built in 1955 and has enlarged and progressed with the times.
It is a fully accredited, ultra-modern 44 bed hospital with 9 actively
practicing physicians on the staff. Dale Decker
is the Administrator and there are 142 full and part-time employees. The
hospital maintains a 24 hour ambulance service with 8 volunteer
drivers. Adjacent to the hospital
is a 56 bed nursing home.
1974--Cumberland is the location
of the Northern Pines Unified Services Center. The Center provides counseling
in Mental Health, Chemical Dependency and Developmental Disability for
children and adults from 5 surrounding counties. The staff consists of
psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, psychiatric social workers, psychiatric
nurses and mental health aides. All of
these people have special
training in the understanding and treatment of persons troubled by emotional
or interpersonal problems.
