| Waupaca County Asylum - Weyauwega, Wisconsin Physician’s Report - For the year ending June 1919 Transcribed by Paula Vaughan October 2010 To the Honorable Board of Trustees of Waupaca County Asylum for the Chronic Insane: I herewith submit my annual report of the medical, surgical and sanitary condition of the Asylum covering the fiscal year ending June 30, 1919. As in former years the general surroundings have been carefully guarded and no sickness has developed through imperfect sanitation or carelessness on the part of those in charge. Notwithstanding the difficulty experienced in securing an adequate amount of help for a considerable portion of the year, the details of management have been cared for in a wonderful manner. There has bee practically no surgery during the past year except of a minor nature. Upon December 27th influenza made its appearance in the Institution and rapidly developed among both patients and employees. For a few days this threatened to become a serious matter through our inability to secure sufficient help. There being ten of the fifteen employees down with the Flu and the utter impossibility of getting outside help at once made the prospects very discouraging. This was made still more critical from the number of severe cases of pneumonia that deve'oped. In spite of it all, however, the employees all recovered and all but three of the patients made very good recoveries. With the exception of influenza there has been nothing out of the ordinary in the way of sickness. The mortality list for the year is as follows: | Name | Age | Date | Cause of Death | | Alvin Gibbons | 71 | July 9 | Exhaustion of Dementia | | William Cowan | 78 | October 20 | Exhaustion of Dementia | | Christan Hansen | 30 | August 7 | Pernicious Anemia | | Mary Abbott | 48 | Sept. 5 | Chronic Nephritis | | August Oelschewski | 29 | Sept. 18 | Epileptic Seizure | | Hugh Gressler | 61 | October 22 | General Paresis | | Henry Huyckes | 87 | November 30 | Hemip'egia | | Mary Philpot | 68 | December 29 | Epileptic Seizure | | James Peter Olsen | 27 | January 4 | Pneumonia | | Celia Jagoditsch | 34 | January 2 | Influenza | | Hattie Carter | 39 | January 3 | Influenza | | Margaraventa Poehlman | 69 | March14 | Sudden Heart Failure | | Joseph Myers | 81 | April 11 | Exhaustion of Dementia | | Claude Cass | 30 | April 26 | Endocarditis | | John Jenquine | 48 | June 30 | Epileptic Seizure | | NOTE from transcriber: The dates given July through December would be 1918 and the remaining dates would be 1919. | Respectfully submitted, E.H.
