GIBBONS, 22, who died in Italy, June 1, 1944, were held Saturday afternoon in the Friends’ church at Valton, with the Rev. Nora CRAVEN officiating, and burial was in the Valton cemetery. Pvt. GIBBONS was inducted into the army on May 10, 1943. He received his training at Camp Claiborne, La., and went overseas, to the North African area, in August. Later he went on to Italy. During the Cassino operations, a motor vehicle in which he was riding collided with an English convoy on a hill, on May 25. He was given prompt medical attention and comrades expected his recovery, but he passed away a week later. Memorial services were held on July 16 at Valton Friends’ church, where he had been a faithful and active member. Delegations from the LaValle and Wonewoc Posts of the American Legion, and the LaValle American Legion Auxiliary were present and assisted in the services. Former schoolmates, all ex-service men, were pallbearers. They were Dale MORTIMER, Harold SOSINSKY, and Donovan SHORE of Valton; Norbert SCHROEDER, Wonewoc; Loren PEARSON, LaValle; and Jesse LEWIS, Milwaukee. Pvt. GIBBONS was a graduate of the Wonewoc High school, class of 1939 and served with the 705 Engineers’ Corps. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray GIBBONS, LaValle, three brothers, Robert of Chicago, Harley of Hillsboro, and Karel of LaValle; one niece and two nephews.
