E. W. GOLDBERG DIES SUDDENLY

For The Second Time Within Two Months, Death Enters The William Goldberg Home


At 11:20 o'clock on the morning of June 12 the family and friends of Ernst WilliamGoldberg were plunged into sorrow for the second time within the past two monthswhen the old gentleman breathed his last. Death was caused from cerebro spinal meningitis.The disease is a serious one in itself and the age of Mr. Goldberg, he was 70 yearsand 9 months, made any hope for his recovery futile. He was taken sick on Thursdayand died on Saturday.

Mr. Goldberg was preceded in death just two months ago, April 19, by his wife, Mrs.Pauline Landgraf Goldberg, so this new sorrow, coming just at this time, makes itdoubly hard on the family and friends of the aged couple. The late Mr. and Mrs. GoldbergSr. were well known in the city of Port Washington having spent 34 years of theirlife here.

Born in Germany in 1855

Ernst William Goldberg was born September 6, 1855at Oberherbigsdorf in Saxony, Germany. He was the son of Christian Goldberg and Mrs.Anna Neumann Goldberg. His childhood and young manhood was spent in Germany. In 1878,at the age of 23 he married Miss Paulina Landgraf. In two more years, they wouldhave been able to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary.

Fourteen years after their marriage, in the spring of 1892 to be exact, the lateMr. and Mrs. Goldberg Sr. and children emigrated to this country and came to PortWashington to establish their home. They have lived here for the past 34 years. Fifteenchildren were born to the couple, nine of whom, five girls and four boys, are stillliving. The four sons left to mourn their father's death are, Max and William Goldbergof Port Washington, Richard of Grafton and Alfred Goldberg of Vallejo, California.The daughters are Mrs. Melanie Klein, Mrs. Lizzie Cotton and Mrs. Lydia Funnell,all of Chicago, Mrs. Ella Mueller of Prairie du Sac and Mrs. Martha Breundl of PortWashington.

Belonged to Local Societies

Besides the children, the deceased leaves five sons-in-law,four daugthers-in-law and twelve grandchildren to mourn his loss. Aside from theimmediate family, there are a great many friends in Port Washington who will missthe old gentleman keenly. He was for many years a member of the Port Washington bandand at the time of his death he was a member of the Concordia society. Three of thepall bearers at the funeral were from the Port Washington band and three were fromthe Concordia society. Those from the band were: Martin Zimmerman, Charles Fryerand Peter Sturm. William Schunknecht, Sam Gunther and Fred Bippert represented theConcordia society.

The funeral services were held at the home at 1:30 on Tuesday with the Reverend Lefkovicsofficiating. From the home, the body was taken to the Forest Home Crematory at Milwaukee.The cremation ceremony was at 4 o'clock.
