LOCAL MATTERS
To-day is the glorious Fourth.

City baker E. JOHN has purchased a handsome new wagon.

Every fireman should be at the engine house in full uniform at 10 o'clock this A.M.Let no one fail to attend.

Boys should be careful in using firearms to-day as some serious accidents may happenif they are careless.

The vacation in our public school commenced last Monday. School will not be openedbefore the first Monday in September.

Jacob DIETRICH, of this city, who resided for some years at Bismarck, Dakota, receivedhis carriage horse from the latter place last Monday. It is an excellent horse andof good stock.

DIED -- in this city on Friday last, Mrs. ERDMANN, after a short illness. Aged 59years. The funeral took place last Sunday afternoon. Rev. E.G. STRASSBURGER officiating.

A number of tramps arrived in the city last Saturday. They camped near the depotuntil Monday when they left for the South. Probably the board they receive at thecity marshall's hotel does not quite suit them.

Those young hoodlums that go home after midnight had better be a little careful andlet their fingers from the property belonging to the city. A few nights ago a streetlamp was lighted when it was a bright moonlight night and shortly after an iron railingwas pulled out of the bridge near the Hilgen Manuf'g Comp. and thrown into the river.Be careful boys or it will be a costly joke.

DEATH OF NICOLAS KEMP, OF PORT WASHINGTON -- As if the thriving little city of PortWashington had not had her share of trouble, the death of one of her most prominentcitizens and business men in the person of Nicolas KEMP, is another addition of inflictinga loss to the whole community. Mr. KEMP died of heart disease at La Mars, Iowa Wednesdaynight of last week.

Mr. KEMP had been feeling unwell for more than three months, and recently left ona trip through the west in the hope of bettering his health. His sudden demise isalso a terrible blow to his family.

He was a business associate of Wm. H. RAMSEY, and together they were principal ownersof the large malting houses.

The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon last and was largely attended by relationsand friends of the deceased from the city and abroad. Several gentlemen came fromMilwaukee and among them we noticed Messrs. Chas. von BAUMBACH, GERHARDY, Von KALTENBORNand others. To the bereaved family we extend our most heartfelt sympathy.

Wm. KALIEBE and family of Milwaukee were in the city last Sunday visiting their parents.
