LOCAL MATTERS

Mr. Wm. SCHROEDER of Milwaukee is home for a few weeks vacation.

Hilgen Bros. have been busy this week buying poultry for the grand prize shootingwhich will take place next Sunday. The Cedarburg Band will also give a concert andin the evening a ball will be held in their hall. All are invited to attend.

Mr. Fred ZIMMERMANN has rented the saloon and hall formerly kept by Mr. A. JOCHEMin the town of Mequon. Mr. Z. will hold a ball at his place on the 28th inst.

The new Catholic church is rapidly nearing completion, and it is expected to be incondition for holding services by October 1st. The spire and outside work is done.Work on the interior is being rapidly pushed forward, a large force of men beingconstantly employed.

A well attended caucus of the republicans of the town of Cedarburg was held at thisplace Thursday evening August 28th. D. WITTENBERG was chosen chairman and L.E. JOCHEMSec'y. Messrs. John GRUNDKE, L.E. JOCHEM and A.R. BOERNER were elected delegatesto represent the Town of Cedarburg at the county convention in Saukville August 30.

After finishing the formal business of the caucus, steps were taken to effect theorganization of a Blaine and Logan club. A meeting for that purpose will be heldon Saturday, Sept. 6 at 8 o'clock P.M. in Schroeder & Trottmann's store oppositetheir mill. It was further resolved to request the Port Washington papers as wellas the NEWS to publish the proceedings.-- D. WITTENBERG, chairman; L.E. JOCHEM, Sec'y.

FREDONIA, Sept. 1, 1884

The Hon. J.J. RACE, who was slightly ill the forepart of last week with blood poisoning,is up and attending to business.

A son of Mr. BORCHARDT the tailor, fell from a see-saw and broke his arm just abovethe elbow on Saturday.

The team of Mr. J. WALS of KOLLER church, ran away Thursday afternoon. His two yearold son was thrown from the wagon and sustained a fracture of the arm near the shoulder.

On Thursday evening, the Fredonia Cleveland and Hendricks Club was organized andthe following officers were elected: H. BERGER, President; John FINTZEN, Nic CIGRAND,Nic SCHUMACHER, James McCARTHY, M.B. MILLER, N.E. BECKER, Chris ROSEART, Vice Presidents;Francis SMITH, Sec.; C.H. WITT, Treas.; John FINTZEN, Gus DEGENKOLBE, Aug. FREDRICHS,executive com. About one fifth of the membership of our club consists of republicans.

In a suit by the state against Wm. BROTT, Mich. BROTT, John DRIES and Alb. USELDING,for burning a bundle of grain belonging to Ed. LUTZEN; the defendants were fined$1 each and costs by Justice SMITH.

LOCAL MATTERS

Dr. Albert FUCHS of Fredonia was in town last Friday.

Remember that our county fair will be held on the 24th and 25th inst. Everybody shouldattend.

A Cleveland and Hendricks club was organized at Grafton last Saturday.

Attend the harvest festival at the Turner Hall next Sunday.

A little child of Mr. ZIPTKE died last Wednesday of summer complaint.

Mr. W.H. FITZGERALD left for Madison to attend the state convention.

The monthly cattle fair will be held at Saukville next Monday.

Don't forget the ball at F. ZIMMERMANN's at Mequon on Sunday the 28th inst. Goodmusic will be in attendance.

The new flouring mills of Grafton is progressing rapidly. We learn that the proprietorswill have a ball in the building as soon as the floor and roof are completed.

Messrs. H. HENTSCHEL, P.K. GANNON, F.W. HORN, W.H. FITZGERALD and many others wereto Milwaukee yesterday to hear Hon. Carl SCHURZ speak.

Mrs. Dr. KRAATZSCH of Plymouth is spending a few days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.Jacob ZAUN of this place.

The democratic county convention to nominate county officers, will be held at thehouse of J.B. SIMON in Grafton on the 18th day of October.

Miss Josephine THELEN of Racine, who has been engaged to teach the intermediate departmentof our public school, was called home last Saturday owing to the sickness of hersister. We learn that she died last Sunday afternoon. Miss KELLY of Milwaukee, fillsthe position until Miss THELEN returns.

The little child of Mr. and Mrs. James NOLAN died last Monday night. Age ten days.

Chas. LUTZ wishes to inform his friends that he opens his barber shop today. Thebuilding adjoining E. GELTCH's drug store owned by Chas. BOXHORN has been leased.

The harvest festival at the Mequon Park last Sunday, held by the Mequon Turn Verein,was quite an affair. A procession was formed, headed by the Germantown Band, whichproceeded through the village and then to the Park. Everybody present enjoyed himself.

A fire broke out in Port Washington, the Frey Block and Th. RUBLY's store being consumedby the flames last Wednesday morning. Loss $3,000, insurance very light.

Next Sunday the Cedarburg Turn Verein will hold its yearly harvest festival in theirhall. Our Band will give a concert in the park during the afternoon, besides thesociety will have a gymnastic performer. They invite everybody to come and have agood time.

A large number of folks attended the concert and prize shooting match at the parklast Sunday. A ball was held in the evening which was also well attended.

A Grand ball will be held at the Apollo Hall on Sunday the 28th inst. Mr. MEYER inviteshis numerous friends to attend.

A large crowd attended the opening of the republican headquarters last Saturday evening.The meeting was called to order by D. WITTENBERG, who nominated J.A. SMITH chairmanpro tem. and James TROTTMANN secretary pro tem.

Permanent officers were then chosen as follows: D. WITTENBERG, pres., J.A. SMITH,Arthur BOERNER and John GRUNDKE, vice pres., L.E. JOCHEM, secy., Jacob ZAUN, treas.,Jos. TROTTMANN, J.F. BRUSS, Wm. LIESENBERG, James HILGEN and J. LAUTERBACH, executivecommittee; John BARTH, A.M. BOEHME, J. H. WITTENBERG, Aug. BOHRTZ and J.F. GROTH,finance committee.

After the organization was effected speeches were made by John GRUNDKE, and JamesTROTTMANN.

LOCAL MATTERS

Messrs. BACH, WINNER and HILGEN of Milwaukee were in town Monday.

Mr. John FITZGERALD of Grafton was in town last Sunday.

Mr. E. B. BOLENS, editor of the Port Washington Star and his son were in CedarburgSaturday last.

The harvest festival will be held at John RINN's Hall in Horn's Corners on Sundaythe 5th day of October. A. WEBER's orchestra will furnish the music.

Mr. and Mrs. J. G. GIER of Chilton were in town a few days last week visiting. Theguests of Mr. and Mrs. P.K. GANNON. The young couple left for Boone, Iowa, last Mondaywhere they will reside.

A Cleveland and Hendricks club was organized at Grafton last Tuesday evening. Thefollowing officers were elected: President, Peter SPEHN; Vice Pres., P. LAABS; Secretary,T.W. MAHEGAN; Treas., Henry SMITH. Meetings will be held by the club every Tuesdayevening until election.

We trust that our Grafton friends will hold at least one meeting with good speakersfrom other parts of the state. Cedarburg being so near, our club here ought to putitself into communication with the Grafton club so that such meetings will take placeat least one week apart in order to get a large attendance at both.

A Democratic County Convention for the county of Ozaukee will be held at the houseof A. AHLHAUSER, in the village of Saukville, on Saturday the 18th day of October,1884 at 11 o'clock A.M. for the purpose of nominating a member of assembly and countyofficers for said county. The basis of representation will be the same as usual.

PERSONAL--The family of our Dairy Editor, J.A. SMITH, was greeted last Friday bythe arrival of Judge Edwin M. RANDALL and wife, of Tallahassee, Florida. The Judgeformerly resided in Waukesha in this state and is the brother of the late Gov. A.W. RANDALL. He was appointed Judge when Florida was admitted under the ReconstructionAct; afterwards, elected Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the State, and isnow one of the members of a law firm, in the Capital of Florida. It was a meetingof those who were schoolmates, neighbors and friends in the Empire that's long yearsago.

CEDARBURG CLEVELAND CLUB
The above club had arranged a meeting last Saturday night at the Turn Hall whichwas fairly attended. The principal speaker was County Superintendent W.F. SCOTT ofthis place and, as this was his first effort, we must say that he exceeded our expectationsby far. His speech was one directed to the reason and not to the passions of hisaudience and was a masterly logical effort. A young German from Hamilton, Mr. WITTIG,made a few appropriate remarks in German as a spontaneous outburst of his feelingswhich were well received. We understand that the next meeting will be held some timeearly next month or at the end of the present when speakers from abroad will be presentand a very large meeting may be expected.

Some time last March James HARDIMAN of Fredonia accidentally struck his ankle withan ax, completely severing the inner mallioulus. He was attended at the time andfor some two months after by A.J. FUCHS of the village of Waubeka, who removed theinjured bone. Through some disagreement Mr. HARDIMAN sought the services of anotherphysician and refused to pay FUCH's bill. A short time ago FUCHS brought suit forhis services which was defended by HARDIMAN on the ground of malpractice. The plaintiffwas represented by HEDDING & JACKSON of this city and the defendant by Tom O'MEARAof West Bend. Trial was had on Monday before Justice CIGRAND at Waubeka and judgmentwas rendered for the plaintiff in the sum of $42.75.

PORT WASHINGTON ITEMS FROM THE Star.

Walter ZASTROW left last Tuesday for Northern Wisconsin. He will visit several placesof interest before returning among them Wausau and Antigo.

The annual meeting of the Old Settler's club of Ozaukee county was held at the UnionHouse in this city, on Thursday last. Outside of the election of officers, nothingof importance was done. All the old officers re-elected vix: President, A.M. ALLING;Vice President, Theo. KLIEFOTH; Secretary, C.E. CHAMBERLIN; Marshal, John C. SCHROELING.It was decided to hold the annual festival some time during November.

Mr. Dan. FANNING was considerably bruised Wednesday. In alighting from his horsehis foot was tangled in the stirrup, and the horse being frightened, started to runaway and before he could be stopped had dragged Mr. F. some distance.

Messrs. HODANN and GERLACH of Mequon were in town last Monday. Miss Josephine THELENreturned from Racine last Saturday.

Everybody should remember that the yearly harvest festival will take place at theApollo Hall next Sunday. Mr. MEYER invites all his friends and patrons.

Mr. John HUNT and family of Milwaukee, were in town last Sunday visiting relations.

Messrs. Arthur BOERNER and James TROTTMANN both of this place left for New York citya week ago and will remain to attend a medical college.

The Columbia Mills near Cedarburg have been undergoing a thorough repair and renovationso as to enable us to do not only all custom work in the best manner, but will guaranteeour flour to be at least equal to that of the roller mills and in some respect evensuperior. The family of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. ZIMMERMANN of Thienville sold their propertytogether with the store to Mr. H. THIERMAN of the same place. They will remove toMilwaukee and make that city their future home.

A new enterprise has been started here in the way of hay pressing. Farmers can nowget rid of all their surplus hay. The press will be here some time this week andin operation by next Monday. It will be set up near the depot. The highest marketprices will be paid for hay. For further particulars inquire of S.S. LEONARD or W.H.HORN.

A large crowd attended the harvest festival at Horn's Corners last Sunday. A busran to and from the picnic grounds to this village during the day and was well patronized.Dancing was indulged in to a late hour in the night.

FREDONIA, Sept. 21, 1884

On the 8th inst. quite a trial was had before Justice CIGRAND and jury. Dr. FUCHSsued James HARDIMAN for a debt of $42.75. HARDIMAN in his answer to the complaint,brought in the counter claim of $1000 for damages done to him and his boy by theunskillfulness of the plaintiff.

The plaintiff, by his witnesses, showed that his claim was just; and proved by theexpert testimony of Dr. SEAN of Milwaukee, Dr. McGOVERN of Cedarburg and others,that his treatment was good and proper; and that he was in nowise to blame for anybad result.

The defendant tried to get some expert sic testimony from this county, but the expertsic did not materialize, greatly to the chagrin of the plaintiff and his friends,who were longing for some fun. The jury gave a verdict for the plaintiff; and onlast Friday Mr. HARDIMAN paid $77 and some cents, judgment and costs. All of thiswould not have been, had the defendant closed his ears to the slanderous talk ofthe non-materializing, presto change, now Jim here now Jim elsewhere, expert.

On the 10th inst. Dr. VOJE returned from his trip to Europe. He spent a very pleasantyear in Germany, Austria and Switzerland; and returns with his family, in excellenthealth. The doctor sold his entire property, drug store, horses and all, to Dr. AlbertFUCHS who will continue to practice here. Dr. VOJE has located in Oconomowoc, wherethe kind wishes of his Fredonia friends accompany him. On Friday evening the villagefolks came together and with a brass band, perpetrated a serenade upon their newburger and doctor. Mr. Francis SMITH made a little speech, wherein he spoke of ageneral welcome and asked the doctor to do honor to a spread which had been preparedin the Sacoger Hall. Arrived at the hall, the good folks were soon seated, and abounteous supper was dispatched. Dancing closed one of the neatest and most cosmopolitanentertainments ever held in our village.

As usual, the Port Washington Star has made a mess of a Fredonia item.-- Willie COOLEY,who had his hand badly injured on the 9th inst. has not had any of the fingers amputated;but will retain all of the members, and that with but very slight impairment of theirbeauty and usefulness.

Mrs. C. ALTENDORF presented her husband with a fine boy on Monday last.

The Fredonia Mills have been newly painted and trimmed up in general, during thepast few weeks.
