Joel Mentzel, 14-year-old son of Allen and Dianne Mentzel of R. 1, Cedar Grove, died Tuesday at University Hospitals in Madison while awaiting open heart surgery.

Joel was born Jan. 18, 1958 at Port Washington and was a ninth grade student at Cedar Grove High School.

Survivors are his parents; a brother, Jeffrey, and a sister, Jean Marie, both at home; paternal grandfather, Herbert Mentzel Sr. of Grafton and maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Roy Livingston of Mequon.

Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Fredonia. Rev. Arthur Senn, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be at St. Paul Cemetery in Grafton.

Friends may call at the Mueller Funeral Home in Grafton after 4 p.m. Thursday.

A memorial fund in Joel's name has been established.
