1614 November 1      Father Marquette        Landed at Kewaunee WI.  He came on Lake Michigan in a birch canoe. 



1795                 Jacques Vieu            A French trader established a "jack knife" trading post at the mouth of the Kewaunee River. 

1800                 Kewaunee River          Early navigators gave the Kewaunee WI river the name Woods River and it was so designated on early maps.  Joshua Hathaway rescued the Indian name Kewaunee in the mid 1800's. 

1845                 Julia Ann               Charles Fellow Became captain of Schooner at 18 yr. This was first vessel to sail into the Ahnapee river. He also was owner & Captain of Whirlwind, the first to load at the bridge pier in Ahnapee WI. 

1847                 Rochester Steamer       First craft into Kewaunee WI. Later it was wrecked off of Two Rivers WI on its way to Kewaunee 

1850                 Fellows Pier            Was at Foscoro which is just south of Door Co. in Kewaunee Co. 1/2 mile)Stoney Creek) 

1850                 Foscoro                 Location It was not known for some yr.. whether Foscoro was in Clay Banks or Ahnapee WI. The PO served by stage coach & telegraph were in Door. The Sawmill Boarding house warehouse & homes were in Ahnapee. Pier was about 1000 ft into lake 

1850                 Silver Creek Pier       Was a mouth of Silver Creek. It as just 2 miles south of Foscoro on Co. U. 

1850                 Casco Pier              Was on Lake Michigan where the sideroad is north of Alaska.  This is now 9th road. 

1853                 First Pier              Was built in Kewaunee WI. by John Volk in 1850.  First vessel to use it was Steamer Fashion. 

1853                 Ships/Steamers          There were at least 20 ships and steamers any time off of Kewaunee WI. 

1854                 Fashion                 Steamer struck rocks, ran ashore and sunk off Kewaunee WI-all passengers saved 

1854                 Tugs                    There were at least 20 fishing tugs running out of Kewaunee WI Harbor. 
1855                 Capt. Zebina Shaw       Moved to Ahnapee then know as Wolf River. From there he sailed the vessel Armslie. He hauled ties, posts, cord wood, and pier timbers for the Ahnapee pier. 

1856                Cleveland                 Side-wheeler was fore-runner of Goodrich Lines. Came into Kewaunee WI 

1856                Goodrich Lines 1856-1911  Came into port of Kewaunee WI. From sidewheelers to propeller driven craft. Carried freight & passengers across lake. Took cheese from Meyer Crosby warehouse next to Goodrich warehouse. Also chickens from Bach-Kieweg & Poser Co. 

1858                Charles Brandeis Sr.      Arrived in Kewaunee WI in 1856 fresh from ship wreck of ill-fated steamer Atlantic on Lake Erie.  He was steward aboard Atlantic and was 1 of 6 survivors. He took charge of Slauson Co. Boarding House on the point until he built the Steamboat House. 

1859                First Schooner            North Star first steamer to arrive at Volks pier. She loaded 105 cords of bark. North Star was built in Kewaunee WI. Was first to use second Pier. 

1860 September 8    Steamer Lady Elgin        Had a collision with the schooner Augusta off of Willmette IL.  300 lives were lost.  Lady Elgin used to come into the port of Kewaunee WI. 

1860                Sandy Bay Pier            Was built by Pfhister.  It was east of Walter Waegli's farm.  There were houses, sawmill, cheese factory, store and building for horse carrying mail from Manitowoc WI to Sturgeon Bay WI. 
1860                Grimms Pier               Was located east of Art Kuehls farm in Pierce, Kewaunee County WI. 

1860                Alaska Pier                Was located just northeast of Don Bothe's farm off Schmidts farm in Kewaunee County WI. 

1860                Carlton Pier               Was located east of Virgil Stangles farm.  There was a cheese factory-store-some homes there. 

1860                The Recruits               US Army recruits for the Union Army left from the second pier in Kewaunee WI. in the civil war. 
1860                Fellows Pier               Was at Foscoro just south of Door County line, at Stoney Creek 

1860               Silver Creek Pier            On Silver Creek on Cty "U" 

1860               Algoma Pier                  In Algoma City 

1860               Casco Pier                   East of Silver Lake on Lake Michigan in the Town of Pierce by the wayside on Hwy 42 north side.

1860               First Bridge                 Was constructed across the Kewaunee River at the end of Main street in the 1860's. the structure was dismantled in the 1880's when the carferry slip was constructed. 
1861               Octavia H. Harbridge         Was wrecked at Kewaunee Harbor WI. 
1861               Civil War                    News of the war did not reach Kewaunee until two days later. the Goodrich steam comet could not get to Kewaunee with the timely information because of heavy icing on the lake. War started April 13, 1861 
1866               Schooner Kewaunee            Beached at Racine WI is going to pieces. The Kewaunee was named after Kewaunee WI. and built at Port Huron in 1866. 
1867 May 9         Manitowoc                    Heels over and sinks off Kewaunee WI. 
1867 May 9         Schooner Kewaunee           Came into port of Kewaunee WI. to use in lumber trade. 

1867               Schooners                   Sardiwa, Lydia, Case, Charly Hibbard and steamers Seebird, Propeller Ottawa were in the port of Kewaunee WI at one time. 
1867               Goodrich Lines              No travel to Ahnapee & Kewaunee WI due to the civil war. 

1867 May 9         First Schooner Kewaunee     Made her first trip to Kewaunee coming from Port Huron through straits on her maiden trip. She was built by Slauson,Kelly,& Murray Co. at Port Huron. Used in lumber trade. At 210 tons one of the fastest craft of her time 

1870               Steamer DePere              Ran service the year around in the early days. There were no carferries to break the ice in Kewaunee WI. harbor. She was a wooden Goodrich ship. When the ice was too heavy to make harbor, she would hang off outside and cargo transferred to horse & sled. 

1871               Scow Shallow                Lies on rocks 4 miles off Kewaunee WI. at Grimms Pier with water and sunk in rough weather. 

1871               Scow built Schooner Howes   Lost off Ahnapee WI during gale, dragged anchor but landed on rocks north of pier. Total loss 

1872               Propeller Oconto            Made her first trip into port of Kewaunee WI. She was visited by many of our citizens. 
1874               Receipts at Fellow's Pier   A vessel brought raw materials to  Fellows pier at Foscoro to be converted into lumber, shingles, and some flour & feed. 

1875              Two Schooners                The Mount Vernon & Two Kitties took cargo of ties to Chicago from Foscoro WI for C. W. Fellows. 

1875              Schooner Mary                Booth Cleared Chicago for Foscoro WI. She was chartered to C. L. Fellows for cargo of wood. She will probably be first vessel of the season to arrive at his pier. 

1876              Emerald Crew                 Crew of the wrecked barges Emerald & Dickinson, who drowned, were taken from Lake MIch. and interred in Kewaunee Cemeteries.  One body was taken to Red River & one body is missing. A propeller arrived with steam pumps but was not able to refloat the barge 

1877              Menominee                    Came into Kewaunee WI. during severe storm from NE. South pier took on flour from W. Seyk Co.  Broke a gangplank and line while at the pier. 

1878              Schooner H. Rand             Off of Kewaunee WI. Lost her deck load of ties and her center board was broken in a storm. 

1878              Schooner Franklin            Was driven ashore during a gale near the Casco Pier.  The deck load of another vessel is scattered along the shore between Ahnapee and Clay Banks. 

1878              Schooner H, Rand             Owned by V. Mashek of Kewaunee WI. will be taken to Manitowoc WI to be remodeled this winter. It will be cut in half and lengthened. 

1878              Icy Piers                    Lake Michigan was white with seas and the piers here were coated with 3 to 4 inches of ice from waves braking over them. 

1878              Propellor DePere             Arrived in Kewaunee WI. to bring in freight & took on board 66 bbl of flour for W. Seyk Co. A car load of peas and carload of barley shipped at the same time. 

1879              Propeller DePere             Came to Kewaunee WI.  Loaded with goodies. Left she took 400 bbls. of flour for W. Seyk. 

1879              Propeller DePere             Took 3 hours to unload DePere in port of Kewaunee WI. It had a cargo of merchandise for store keepers here. 

1880              Tug Thomas                   Spear Bound from Two Rivers WI to Ahnapee WI had two stone barges in tow.  Caught fire and burned off Sandy Bay WI.-crew safe. 

1880 May 31       A Schooner                   Loaded with Hemlock ties cleared Carlton Pier.  Second shipment cargo shipped from there. 
1880              Steamers                     Sheboygan & Chicago who came into the port of Kewaunee WI have coal grates not wood burning grates. 

1880              Steamer Jos. Duvall          Left Kewaunee WI for Chicago IL with a cargo of bark. Out of Two Rivers WI capsized with all hands. Owners were Jos. Duvall  of Kewaunee WI and G. W. Slauson of Racine WI. Value of this schooner was $7,000. 
1880              Kewaunee River               Had its outlet below what is known as Leindeckers hill. The only bridge was on Main Street. Piers were located at the old Coast Guard station and Pioneer Park. 
1881              Schooner S. Bater            Collided off Ahnapee WI with scow in tow of the tug Gregory.  Slightly damaged 
1881              The Daisy Day (Stmr.. Barge) Was loaded with 4500 Bu. of wheat and barley in Kewaunee WI. 

1881              Tug Cyclone                  Left Kewaunee WI with oak timber.  Tug lost tow account of bad weather, strained lumber all along beach. 

1881              Wrabetz Scows                Were launched at his yard at Kewaunee WI. 

1881              Schooner Lady Ellen          Came into Kewaunee WI. from Ahnapee loaded down with 700 Bu of Wheat for W. Seyk. 

1881              Little Schooner Elgin        Was in the port of Kewaunee WI. with 290,000 shingles for George Grimmer. 

1881              Chicago                      First steamer to land at Algoma WI since big gale. Citizens pier was washed away.  Since that time all Ahnapee freight was landed in Kewaunee WI. 

1881              Port of Kewaunee WI          Received $3000 for survey of the harbor and $6000 got construction of a lighthouse. And in 1881 began with development of the channel and touring basin. 
1881              Improvements - Kew. Harbor   First improvements included development of Channel and turning basin. Part of Fisherman's point was cut off. W. Seyk Co had a warehouse there used for hauling ham & coal. It was removed. 
1882 May          Schooner Petrel              Went ashore at Ahnapee WI last week.  It has been released. 

1882              Schooner H. Rand             Loaded ties in the port of Kewaunee WI. for V. Mashek. 

1882              Steamer Sheboygan            Took a load of flour and grain at Mashek's pier in Kewaunee County WI. 

1882              Mashek's Pier                Was located where Art Seidl farm is now.  It's three miles north of Kewaunee WI. 

1882              Tug Gagnon                   From Two Rivers WI came into port of Kewaunee WI.  It brought in a load of Freight for Trudell and Bertheline. 

1882              Schooner H. Rand             Was the first sail to arrive at Kewaunee WI. this season.  Vessel is handsome as a daisy in her new spring dress. 

1882              Harbor Piers                 Work resumed on the 400 ft of Harbor Piers to be built in Kewaunee WI.  150 ft will be constructed this year. 

1882              New Lighthouse Keeper        New keeper of the Kewaunee WI harbor Pier light arrived here by train. 

1882              Tug Artic                    Tug of Manitowoc WI towed some 80 pieces of timber to Manitowoc for Jason Pellet who is getting timber in Montpelier, Kewaunee County WI. 

1882              Ole Olsen                    This unfortunate seaman that drowned at Grimm's pier north of Kewaunee WI six weeks ago was picked up at Two Rivers by fisherman. It was in good shape yet after 40 days in the water. 

1882              Charles Berner               Finished his contract on the Kewaunee WI harbor & it's to be complimented for the work he has done. 

1882              First Ferry Steamers         The two ferry steamers which will run between Kewaunee WI and Frankfort MI will be launched at Toledo OH about Sept. 1 1882. She will be named Ann arbor and as she is launched she will be in complete readiness. 

1882              Harbor Piers Contract        Contract let for building 400 ft of harbor piers at Kewaunee WI to H. M. Scove of Manitowoc WI. 

1882              Sail Boats                   Several small sail boats stolen from a Sheboygan party were recovered by Sheriff Shilbauer. A mile south of Kewaunee WI several Carlton men gave chase to the thief in a fast sailer, but he ran the boat ashore and escaped. 

1882              Steamer Espinola             Loaded ties here in Kewaunee WI for Jos. Duvall & Co. 

1882              Capt. Andrew Hansen          Was drowned off the Sailor Boy near Grimms pier. A reward is offered for recovery of the body, which will be washed ashore in this region. 

1883              Repair Bridge                Contract let for repairing bridge in Kewaunee WI was let to Mr. Roubal. Several piles will be driven & new members put in to receive a general overhaul. 

1883              Foscoro Pier                 During storm about 100 ft of Swatz & Fellows Pier at Foscoro went into the lake with about 10-15 cords of wood. 

1883              City of Ludington            Came into Kewaunee port & Loaded with 600 bags of flour & 400 bags of grain. 

1883              River & Harbor Bill          Reported to the US House contains $ 8000 each for Kewaunee WI & Algoma WI. 

1883              Duvall's Pier                Suffered considerably from the storm and heavy seas. 

1883              Jos. Lain                    Shipped 400 lb. of fresh fish from Kewaunee to Ahnapee by boat. He received 5 1/5 cents per lb. 

1883              Propeller Oconto             Brought new windows and doors door new Catholic Church built last summer.  Materials were from fort Howard. 

1883              H. M. Scove of Manitowoc     Arrived here to begin work on the extension of the harbor piers. 300 feet is to be added to the north pier. 

1883              McDonald & Co.               7000 pounds of fresh fish have been shipped to market by McDonald & Co. of Ahnapee WI. 

1883              Steam Yacht                  New steam yacht built at Hanson & Scoves Shipyards of Manitowoc for Fred Johannes of Kewaunee WI. arrived on the steamer Corona. 

1883              New Stone Scow               A new scow was completed by J. Smoke & H. Hanson. they will commence gathering stones on the beach for the Kewaunee Harbor. 
1883              Schooner  "Ahnd"             Brought a cargo of salt for Mashek & Metzner Co. to Kewaunee WI.  She departed with a cargo of 1,500,00 shingles. 
1883              Scow Laura Johnson           Brought a cargo of lumber from Two Rivers to Kewaunee WI. for Henry Tisch's new residence./ Lumber was sawed at Manger & Lufter's mill. 

1885              Barge Burrouch               Came into port of Kewaunee WI. It took cargo out for Jos. Duvall & Co. 

1886 December     Tug Nettle Dannalson         Was breaking ice in Kewaunee WI. for the Government dredge.  Ice was 5 ft. to 7 ft. 
1886              Season of 1886               Severe on Lake Michigan. 621 vessels met disaster. 

1887              Corona                       Took aboard largest shipment of cheese aboard, 6 1/2 tons in Kewaunee WI. 

1887              Steamers & Schooners         There were 322 Steamers and 209 Schooners visited port of Kewaunee WI. 

1887              Steamer Grace Williams       Got 60 tons of coal out of the hull Emerald which sank in Kewaunee WI. 

1887              Steamer Ford                 Is now in Frankfort MI waiting orders to go into commission in the flour trade between Frankfort MI and Kewaunee WI. 

1887              Barge Emerald                Went on beach Nov. 17, 1887 in the port of Kewaunee WI. It was released from the sandy bed and towed into harbor. 

1888 November 17  Emerald                      Schooner of 287 tons became a total loss in heavy SE gale off Kewaunee WI.  Cargo coal vessel $8000. 5 lives lost. 

1888              Green                        Damaged her bow when she struck the South pier at Kewaunee WI. 

1888              Barge P. Leuty               24 miles out connecting rod broke.  Crew came ashore at Kewaunee WI. in a yahl to get help.. 

1888              Schooner Lizzie Metzner       Came into port of Kewaunee WI. She is 78 ft long, beam 21 ft, depth 6 ft. 

1888              Steamer Ludington             Came into Kewaunee WI. Had difficult time reaching her moorings, usual thick ice.  Left port she was caught in ice about one mile off Ahnapee.  Remained there for 2 days. 

1888              Schooner Lizzie Metzner       Came into port of Kewaunee WI. with quantity of peaches. They sold $0.50 a Bu. 

1888              Barge Burroughs               Arrived in the port of Kewaunee WI. with a cargo of corn and other merchandise. 

1888              Barge Burroughs               Came into port of Kewaunee WI. loaded with hay for Manistee MI. Heavy seas on Lake Mich.  The miles out of port several tons rolled into the lake. 

1888              Steamer Ludington             Gave the port of Kewaunee WI the go-by. There was a heavy storm. Warehouses are overloaded with freight for the south.  Steamer Chicago will be coming in. 

1888              Schooner Lizzie Metzner       Just completed at Manitowoc WI. Owners are Mashek, Metzner, W. Seyk, and Capt. Voss of Kewaunee WI. Made first appearance here. 78 ft long, beam 21 ft and depth 6 ft. Left port with cargo of bark for Sheboygan WI. 

1888              Schooner Lumberman            Owned by V. Mashek of Kewaunee WI. and Capt. Hanson will be placed in winter quarters in Manitowoc WI. She will be rebuilt. 

1888              Southeast Gale                Prevailed on the lake-drove quite a fleet of schooners into Kewaunee WI harbor. 

1888            Little Brown Church             Was built on hill where John Berner's home is now. It was a Union Congregational Church. Located nearby was a high tower which flew flags showing sailors the expected weather conditions as they came by. 

1888              Hathaway's Park               Was located around the river bend from Edwin Waterstreets home (Old Shooting Park) on the Kewaunee river. 

1889 November 1   Florence M. Dickinson         Coal laden schooner lost off Kewaunee WI in fierce winter storm. 

1889              Steamer Bell Laurie           Went ashore at Ahnapee WI in a gale, was towed into harbor 

1889              Jim Smith                     Second Officer on Ann Arbor No 2 came ashore on the ice.  Boat was stuck in windrow of ice. 

1889              Steam Tug                     A. C. Raalte, schooners Ida, Rosa, Belle, and Cynthia Gordon came into Kewaunee WI.. harbor because of heavy seas and needed shelter. 

1889              Schooner Lizzie Metzner       Is in port of Kewaunee WI. When in Chicago IL, her main top was carried away. Contact was with another schooner. 

1889              Steamer Ludington             Went ashore on Peninsula Point near Escanaba MI.  Was released without damage. Made her appearance in Kewaunee WI. 

1889              Ann Arbor NO 3                Was built in Cleveland OH for Toledo & Ann Arbor RR to shorten trip on Lake Michigan. It will come into port of Kewaunee WI. 

1890              Vessels                       589 vessels, 207,550 tons entered and cleared port of Kewaunee WI. 

1890              Shooting Park Members         Were Jos. Mueller, Wm. Hessel, Fredrich Johannas, Henry Rooney, Frank Moudry, Henry Jonas, August Bohne, Fred Kassner, Jake Kuhlanek, Henry Hognekamp, Phillip Arnold & Jos. Lain. 

1890              W. Seyk Co.                   Shipped about 1300 tons of hay. It took 130 carloads to ship it to the sea coast. 

1891                                            There were 203 schooners, 151 steamers, 117 propellers, 61 steam barges, and 43 tugs enter and clear harbor at Kewaunee WI. 

1891              Steamer Ludington             Took 75 tons of freight here at Kewaunee WI. 

1891              Crews                         Arrived here ion the Muskegon at Kewaunee WI to move light house location on North pier from present location to outer end of pier. 

1891              Ludington                     Left Kewaunee WI with 1800 bags of peas shipped by W. Seyk Co. and L. J. Conway of Kewaunee WI. 

1891              Tug Vlasta                    Delivered 850 cords of stone from footbridge quarries to Kewaunee WI. 

1891              Old Schooner                  Transit Loaded with hard wood attempted to make Kewaunee WI. harbor. North pier was lengthened during summer and lighthouse wasn't moved. Sailed vessel right into harbor pier, sprung a leak and hit rocks . Took ship valuables and lowered yahl to come ashore 

1891              City of Sheboygan             Was in port of Kewaunee WI. It took 75 tons of freight to go south. 

1891              Port of Kewaunee WI.          Is one of the great marine ports of northern lakes. The harbor is free from ice in winter and steam craft can enter it all season. There is no undertow and vessels can lie near the mouth of the harbor in the wildest storm. 

1891              The Kewaunee River            At its mouth the river is bulled as perhaps the longest natural stream emptying into Lake Mich. Navigable for a distance of 6 miles from its mouth and 3 miles it has a depth from 12 to 18 ft. 

1891              Depth between Piers           Between the piers at Kewaunee WI. the depth is at 15 feet. 

1891              Port of Kewaunee              Tonnage 800 craft averaging 350 tons entered and cleared the port of Kewaunee WI. 

1892              Ann Arbor No. 1               First ferry to Kewaunee WI. 

1892              Goodrich Boats                Picked up 2,800 Bu peas from W. Seyk Co. of Kewaunee WI to go south. 

1892              Historical Marker.            A historical marked at the Kewaunee WI ferry yard commemorates the first lake crossing of ferries. 

1892              William Flaherty Jr.          Accepted a position as wheelsman on the Steamer  City of Marquette.  He sailed on the schooner Lizzie Metzner.  He will make his first trip here in December. 

1892              The Railroad Yards            The yards at Kewaunee WI. are crowded with cars of flour, which arrive faster than can be transported across the lake.  The Ann Arbor No 1 takes 22 cars at a time. 

1892              Schooner Lizzie Metzner       Came into Kewaunee WI.  Last of the season and gone into winter quarters.  Brought 45,000 Bu. of wheat for Kewaunee Milling Co. 

1892 November 27  Ann Arbor No. 1               First carferry to enter Kewaunee WI.. port. Marked the epoch not only in history of Kewaunee WI. but the whole country when Ann Arbor No 1 slipped into Kewaunee harbor 

1892              Ferry RR Yard                 Spur tracks have been added near the rail road car ferry dock in Kewaunee WI.  There are four tracks now. 

1892              Scow (John Wrabetz's)         Stone scows became untied and probabilities are that it drifted out on the lake.  Search was made on the beach as far as Carlton, but no traces were found in Kewaunee County WI. 

1892              Schooner Lizzie Metzner       Was laid up here in Kewaunee WI. for the past winter.  Has been fitted out. It expects to start across the Lake to Frankfort MI to get a load of slabs. 

1892              Cheese Shipment               Shipment of cheese from port of Kewaunee WI via Goodrich Line had 608 boxes or 31,360 lb.. Prices paid were 9 3/4 cents for young Americans and 9 1/4 cents for Flats. 

1892              New RR Ferry                  Dock is in progress of construction here in Kewaunee WI. It is rapidly nearing completion. It makes a mammoth appearance and will contain about 350 piles. 

1892              Schooner Roving Star          Cargo of lumber was brought here from Menominee MI on the Schooner Roving Star.  City clerk J. H. Rooney & Joe Simon completed plans for new dwelling to be erected this summer. 

1892              Bottcher & Borgman             Shipped a cargo of 20,000 bricks to Menonomie WI aboard Schooner B. S. Paige. 

1892              Ann Arbor No 1                 Ran aground near Clay Banks. It was on the second trip going to Kewaunee WI.-freed with little trouble 

1892              Excursion                      From Kewaunee WI to Ahnapee on the steamer City of Marquette given by the Lutheran Church was a most enjoyable affair. 

1892 July 30      Schooner Lizzie Metzner        Is in port of Kewaunee WI. this week.  She is taking a cargo of posts for the Mashek Co. 

1892              Schooner Jane Anderson         Was in port of Kewaunee WI with a cargo of MI peaches and other fruit. She was first fruit vessel to arrive this season. 

1892              Voyta Mashek                   Of Kewaunee WI came home from European Steamer Spree to New York. Quarantined there for 48 hr. because of Cholera scare. Owns Schooner Metzner. 

1892             James Ahely                     Dreamed of using freighter as a continuation of a rail line. Realized as the wooden hulled 260 ft Ann Arbor #1 was designed by Naval Architect Frank K. Kirby. Ann Arbor was put into service between Frankfort MI & Kewaunee WI. 

1892             Schooner Hattie Earl            A strong gale from the south caused the Schooner Hattie Earl to fly distrss signals as she drifted toward the reef north of the harbor.  after summoning a tug, a manned yahl boat went to her assistance. 

1892 Nov 26     Ann Arbor # 1                   Ran aground just north of Kewaunee on its maiden trip to Kewaunee. Was pulled by tug Favorite and put into harbor undamaged. It unloaded & loaded 22 carloads of flour. 

1893             Life Saving Station             Contract for erection of Life Saving Station at Kewaunee WI. awarded to Frank Hamachek whose bid was $ 8,223. 

1893             Ann Arbor No 2                  New ferry arrived for the first time. Similar to NO 1 but longer and wider. Goes at 1144 tons while No 1 is about 1127 tons. Left for Frankfort with 22 cars. 
1893             Old Pier Piles                  Fred Wallner is hauling the piles of the old pier cut off and intends to sue the timber for barrel staves. 

1893             Ice Harvest                     Harvest started in Kewaunee WI. and many men and teams are now engaged in cutting and hauling the crop. The ice on the river is 22 inches thick and clear as crystal. 

1893             Stone Quarry                    A new quarry opened near Slovan and promises to be an important industry. Stone will be loaded on dump cars and brought by rail to docks at Kewaunee WI. New docks will be on the edge of the bayou north of the ferry slip. 

1893             Nelson Craite                   Of Two Rivers Coast Guard arrived in Kewaunee WI to take ever new lifesaving station on North side of harbor. Crew was selected later. No road so contact was via rowboat across harbor. At turn of Century patrol as far as Masheks to the north a were made. 

1893             Lighthouse Flag                 Lighthouse keeper conceived idea that the American flag should fly on certain days over the lighthouse.  Passed the hat and raised enough for a 20 ft flag. 

1893             New Life Saving Station         Mr. Hamachek is getting materials ready to commence work upon the new life saving station to be built on the point near the north harbor pier. 

1893             Schooner William Flinch         Arrived right from the south and took a cargo of shingles for Racine from Algoma WI. 

1893             Charles Fiala                   Resigne a position of clerk at Jos. Schultz & Co. Clothing store. Will be a steward on the Steamer City of Marquette. 

1893             Schooner Lady Ellen             Came into harbor at Algoma WI from Milwaukee with part cargo of back freight of merchandise for local dealers. 

1893             English & Hall                  Contracted with KGB RR Co. to haul 13000 carloads of stone from their new quarry to city of Kewaunee. It will be used to complete the new docks. 

1893             Goodrich Steamer                Left Kewaunee for Chicago IL for the purpose of seeing the wonders of the World's Fair. On board were 4 couples. A. Kizbercen's, N. Kuffann's. O. Warner's,and E. Ropheygy's. Also F. Tirner. 

1893            Algoma Piers Pile Driver        Owned by John Borgman is expected to start work in Algoma on the harbor piers. Mr. Borgman has contract to put in connections between the piers & wing cribs. 

1895             Life Saving Crew                Crew of Kewaunee WI.. was called out late in afternoon. Signals of distress from boat off Two Creeks. Crew started to row to the barge. Heavy seas prevented headway. Took team and boat with them. Arrived there all they wanted was food. They were out.

1896             Steamer Nevada                  Cargo of 1040 tons of coal sprung leak several miles off of Kewaunee WI. on Friday night and foundered about 10 o'clock Sat. morning. 

1896 October 27  Schooner Resumption             Due to strong head winds could not get into harbor at Kewaunee WI. Kewaunee Life Saving crew ran lines to her and assisted her to a secure berth.

1896             City of Sheboygan               Named after Sheboygan WI was built by Rand Shipyards of Manitowoc WI. Was sister ship to the Kenosha. With Goodrich lines for 45 yr.. Went aground in fog at entrance to Sturgeon Bay. Hull repaired at Mant.. Took no more passengers. Came into Kew. in 1914. 

1897             Capt. Jim Armstrong             Of Algoma WI owner of the schooner Wright was seriously hurt.  He was on the steamer of Romene and bumped by a hand cart. 

1898             The Kewaunee                    Was first steam boat on the Kewaunee River.  Kewaunee WI Boat sold and used to transport soldiers in WW. 

1898             Kewaunee WI.                    Will get $10,000 Harbor improvement.  South pier will be made 300 ft longer and erection of life saving station. 

1898             Capt. Cornell                   Was fishing out of Kewaunee WI. and came into a heavy sea.  Sails tore and spent night on Lake Mich. 

1898             New Steel Ferry                 Ann Arbor No 3 made her maiden trip to Kewaunee WI.. from Frankfort MI. 

1898             Ann Arbor                       People Making arrangements for more freight to Kewaunee WI. this winter.  In addition to the 3 ferries, steamer Hennigin & Alice Stafford will be added. 

1898             New Steel Carferry No 3         Demonstrated the success and feasibility of transporting loaded freight cars across the lake.  Asley made tests six yr. ago & were ridiculed. Ann Arbor ran steel boat all Winter. Govt. ordered lighthouse keepers to keep lights on all Winter. 

1898 October 4   Second Bridge                   City council approved building a new bridge of 182ft long by 18 French wide.  Work by Milwaukee Bridge & Iron Works. Bridge ran from  Cooperative to fisherman's point. 

1898             Suckers                         Suckers are plentiful below the dam at Bruemmer & Co. Dam in Ahnapee WI. They can be pitched out of the water with a hay fork. Wagon loads are taken. 

1899             Goodrich Steamer Sheboygan      The first Side-wheeler steamer to arrive at Kewaunee WI harbor this season. 

1899             Govt. Dredge No 1               Finished operations in Kewaunee WI harbor-left for Algoma. 

1899             Schooner James Hill             In tow for the Goodrich Line.  Tug Artic was brought to Kewaunee WI. Loaded 8000 Bu of Barley at Kewaunee Grain Co. 

1899             C. W. Peake                     Agent for Ann Arbor lines arrived in Kewaunee WI. Made arrangements for packaged freight from this port. 

1900 Est'd       Corona                          Sidewheel steamer that ran in the Goodrich lines for 20 yr. was sold in Chicago for $15,000. It used to come into Kewaunee WI. 

1900 May 31      Steamer                         Kewaunee Launched at old Jess Erichsene Channel at Kewaunee WI. 

1900             Lighthouse                      Has been on south pier since about 1900. Once it was on the north pier. A new cement pier was put on the south side. Power for the light came from hand-shoveled coal fired boiler with steam running a generator. Fog horn was also steam. 

1900             Lighthouse (cont'd)             Old groaning fog horn replaced by sirens on a crib out in the lake and at the lighthouse. They are activated by photoelectric sensors. At on time two lighthouse keepers lived at 718 Main St. 

1900             Algoma Fishing Fleet            A picture of the fleet was hanging in the Lohery tavern, since torn down, near 4th and Steele streets. At that time they had sailing boats. Fished white fish, trout and perch. Cotton nets were hauled out, cleaned in hot water,& dried on revolving racks. 

1900             Steam Fog Signal                Congressman Bricker has introduced a bill in Congress for a steam fog signal at Kewaunee WI. Cost estimated at $5,000. 

1900             Seyks Mill                      The sucker run was a highlight. Spears, pitchforks, dip & cross nets, even hands were used top catch them. Smoke and pickling were the order of the day. 

1901             Day Spring                      Came into Kewaunee WI Harbor waterlogged.  Got pumped out and left with Cord Loop. 

1901             Pere Marquette                  Line has permission to change names of steamers and carferries from F. & PM to Pere Marquette. 

1901             Charles Petterson               Keeper of Kewaunee WI. Light House along with his son drowned when they ventured out in a storm. Schooner Julia B. Merric lost part of her deck load when they tried to get it. ??? 

1902 March       RR Docks                        Contract for rebuilding the docks of the Kewaunee Green Bay and Western RR was awarded to John M. Borgman here in Kewaunee WI. 

1902             Goodrich Liner                  City of Racine has been equipped for receiving messages from shore by wireless telegraph.  All steamers of this line will be furnished with it this summer.  the Goodrich line steamers came into port of Kewaunee WI. 

1902             Pleasure Yachts                 W. Heck, Anton and William Dishmaker of Kewaunee WI. will build for themselves two pleasure yachts engines. 

1902             Bill & Tony Dishmaker           Of Kewaunee WI sold their small gas launch to George D. Arnold of Sault Ste.. MI.  Craft was shipped from here by the Goodrich line. 

1902             Electrical Storm                An electrical storm struck the Schooner Nellie and Annie which were in port of Kewaunee WI.. It badly scattered the fore topmast. The Capt. and crew were badly frightened by the bolt. 

1902             First Cargo of                  Grain Was taken out of Kewaunee WI this season by the steamer Welcome. It was shipped by Kewaunee Grain Co. to Manitowoc WI. Two trips were made in one day, 9500 Bu. 

1902             Anton Dishmaker                 Is putting finishing touches on his pleasure yacht. Its a neat little craft. Seats ten ten people and is propelled by a gas engine. 

1902             Heavy Winds                     Winds and snow storm on Sunday caused two steamers, John Otis and Mathew Wilson to come into port of Kewaunee WI for shelter. They were loaded with lumber for Chicago. 

1902 no date     First Sailing Craft             First craft to put into port of Kewaunee WI  this season was the Augusta. It was a two masted schooner. It brought a boat load of salt from Ludington MI for a local merchant. 

1902             George Mashek                   Came into port of Kewaunee WI for a short time. He has a new yacht he built for himself at Manitowoc WI which he is taking to Escanaba MI. It is 32 ft long and carries 1250 ft of canvas. 

1902             Capt. Craite                    Selected Peter Deneau of Ludington MI to fill the vacancy at the Life Saving Station Kewaunee WI. by resignation of Jos. Gauthier. 

1902             Ed. Shilbauer                   Returned to Kewaunee WI after some time on the Schooner Welcome. He will accept a berth on the Ann arbor Lines. 

1902 August      Jim Smith                       Kewaunee Jim Smith accepted a berth as second officer on the Goodrich Liner, Chicago. 

1902             Sheboygan                       Dense fog on lake caused Sheboygan onto beach at Foscoro, 17 miles from Kewaunee WI. Boat was southbound & had 30 passengers. All were landed in small boats & conveyed by team to Algoma WI. 

1903 Sept 18     Dawn                            Schooner of 26 tons. On third mile SE from North side of entrance to Kewaunee Harbor. vessel $250 

1903             Two Gas Fishing Boats           Two boats to be used by Coward and John Lain of Kewaunee WI. were brought here from Two Rivers WI. 

1903             Seyk Mill                       Large crowds went to Seyk's Mill in West Kewaunee WI to witness the opening of the dam and the large sport of catching suckers. 

1903             Jos. Allie                      Gas Engine Engine built by Kewaunee Iron Works has proven a success. It is in good working order in the Machinac boat owned by Jos. Allie. 

1905             Schooners                       City of Sheboygan and Kohn Mee came into port of Kewaunee WI. for shelter from heavy seas.  They broke loose and caused a lot of damage. Ida came into port with canvas gone and hold flooded. 

1905             The Storm                       Storm which raged here in Kewaunee WI was worst yet. Wind @ 70 mph with huge sea. Schooners City of Sheboygan & John Mee ran into the harbor for shelter. Broke loose from moorings and crashed into piles of old bridge after carrying away Harvey Ransom jib. 

1905             The Storm (cont'd )             Crushed and tore up 30 ft of dock and demolished power house. Waves threw stones on north wall of harbor onto lawn of Lifesaving Station. Schooner Ida came into port with hull flooded. LifeSaving busy all night & harbor jammed with craft. 

1905             Third Bridge                    Crossed the Kewaunee River from Park Street to Fisherman's point. It was an iron bridge. 

1906             Aluminum Sign Co.               Sign Co. of Kewaunee WI to dismantle hulls of schooners, Edith L. Kayen, exchange steamer barge Liberty and tug James E. Brooks laying in North Basin. 

1906             F. Hamachek Mach. Co.           Erected a pontoon bridge to the ferry slip. It lasted only nine years as records show it was condemned. 

1908             Govt. Pile Driver               No. 1 sank at its moorings while at work in 14 ft of water in Algoma WI.  Heavy Hammer drawn aloft broke loose.  Crushed through the Scow. 

1908             Tug Artic                       Was towing 3 cement cassions from Kewaunee WI. to Manitowoc WI. Broke loose in PM. Tug came back to Kew to get assistance from Coast Guard. Finally brought to Kew. Cassions used to fill gap between harbor piers in Manitowoc. 

1909             Schooner UNA                    Loaded with cord wood sprung leak a few miles north of Algoma WI.  Ran itself ashore. Released by Kewaunee Life Saving Crew. 

1909             Stm. Barge Francis Hinton       Left Manistee MI Nov. 16 1909 with lumber. She was caught in a severe  storm. Pumps failed and she drifted ashore a mile from Manitowoc. Tug could not reach, she beached, and broke in half. Crew & captain escaped. 

1909             Ann Arbor Boats                 During the past week, there have between four Ann Arbor boats daily in Kewaunee WI.. taking 100 loaded cars every 24 hours. 

1909             The "Kewaunee"                  Built in Kewaunee WI marked shoals on Lake Erie. 

1910             Goodrich Boats                  Stopped at Algoma WI. at old Merchants Dock Co.  It was built by local merchants.  Extended to the inner harbor.  Freight was cheese, eggs, and crates of live chickens. 

1910             Ann Arbor No 1                  Caught fire in Manitowoc WI and burned to waters edge after 18 yr. of service. It was the first ferry in Kewaunee WI. 

1910             Fourth Bridge                   Ran just east of Svoboda's Industries to Fisherman's point. It came out on the north side of the river by the entrance to The US Army Corp. of Engrs. Depot. 

1911 April 13    Ottawa                          Schooner lost 6 miles north of Algoma WI in frightful storm. Five lives lost. 

1911             Rank                            Kewaunee WI ranked 8th a among Lake Michigan ports.  Twenty two vessels were here in February-26,685 tons. 

1911             Golden Girl                     Came into port of Kewaunee WI.  Loaded with grapes for the store. 

1911             Goodrich Co.                    Will have more boats in Kewaunee WI.  they will be Carolina, Arizona, Georgia, and Chicago. 

1912             Twenty Eight                    Steamers came into Kewaunee WI harbor with a tonnage of 32,006 tons reported by deputy collector of customs Charles Pistor. 

1912             New Lighthouse                  Is nearing completion here in Kewaunee WI.  Crew is engaged in erecting a 70 ft steel tower for the range light. 

1912             George Flaherty                 Son of George Flaherty Sr. Of Kewaunee WI.  Was 18 yr. old.  Hurt his right arm when a heavy bar fell on it.  He was employed on the barge John Kecham.  He broke it in several places and Mrs. Lutien is his nurse. 

1912             Capt. N. C. Craite(USCG)        Rec'd orders to open lifesaving station. Crew was George Flaherty, Conrad Olson,L. E. Brown, and B. Leclair. 

1912             Navigation                      Began on Lake Michigan when the first boat of the season outside of all winter boats was seen going north. It was the steamer Louis Pahlow. Capt. Metzner and Capt. Smith purchased the steamer The Swan of W. J. Scully of Detroit. 

1912             Mrs. C. W. Read                 Her house down by the lake is rented by M&M Lewis Hickey.  Mr. Hickey is a member of the local Kewaunee WI life saving crew. 

1912             Charles Pistor                  Was Deputy collector of Customs at Port of Kewaunee WI. 

1912             Kewaunee WI. Harbor             Has one of the finest & latest equipped light houses & fog signal on the lake. It is of steel & cement & fireproof. The steam whistle was replaced by an air pressure for signal. 

1912             Govt. Work                      Progressing in Kewaunee WI. on erection of a new fog signal station and lighthouse. It's first kind in service on the south pier. 

1912             Old South Pier                  Only 250 ft of the south pier piling remains. When redone it will be made of concrete and cement. Derricks from Sheboygan WI were used in this work. 

1912             Life Saving Station             Remodeling of the station was recently finished. $3500 is the contract by Albrecht Mfg. Co. and Guse Brothers. 

1913 November 26 Rouse Simmons Freighter.        Last seen by US Coast Guard Surf Boat out of Kewaunee WI.  Cargo of Christmas trees. 17 lives lost. 

1913            Anton M. Jessen                 No 1 of Plum Island lifesaving crew was appointed Captain of the Kewaunee WI station. Capt. & Mrs. N. C. Craite left for Racine where they will reside 

1913             Emerald Wreckage                Empty trunk with names Rouse Simmons, J. E. Lathrop found on beach by Gordon & Dewey Dishmaker. Only wreckage to come ashore here. Trunk brought to Kewaunee WI. 

1913             Capt. Nollmer                   Master of Govt. Dredge Algoma left for Marion OH to look at plans for a new dredge. which will be named after Kewaunee WI. Contract for building was awarded to Marion Steam Shovel Co. 

1913 July       Pere Marquette Line             Kewaunee will be western gateway of the car ferries between Kewaunee WI & Ludington MI. 

1913             Louis Trottman                  The ice King has a crew cutting ice. It is of excellent quality, 16 inches thick and clear as crystal. 

1913             Lake Trout                      Now selling for 15 cents per pound. 

1913             Eugene V. Kimball               Dad charge of Lighthouse for number of years has been transferred to Algoma WI. 

1913             Fish Tug Madues                 Was struck by Ann Arbor carferry while the latter was entering Kewaunee WI. harbor. Damage was estimated at $500. 

1913             Jack Kenny                      Family moved into Govt. dwelling at local yard. Capt. Alexander of tug Manitowoc moved into former Geo. Duvall home. 

1913             Shooting Park Hall Fire         Fire of unknown origin destroyed the fine shooting park hall at a loss of about $1000. Hall was west of Kewaunee on the River near Hathaway Park. 

1913             Lodge Entertainment             Kewaunee Lodge No 196 F&am in Kewaunee wi. entertained its neighbors. Steamer Bon Ami from St. Bay arrived in port with 42 members. Steamer Arizona from Two Rivers with 25 members. Others came in carriages and auto from Algoma WI. 

1913             Man Lost from Canoe             The Kewaunee River claimes another victim when Leonard Novotony lost his life in a canoe which capsized at the bend of the river opposite the Manger Factory. 

1915 October 22  Adriatic                        Pulled by Tug Leathem D. Smith due to rough weather coming into Kewaunee WI. Stern crashed into ranger light on south pier.  Knocked it into harbor 

1915             Liner Eastland                  Rolled over in the Chicago river. Was to take Western electric on a family picnic to IN. Wiped out 22 families -835 lives. Mrs. John Wierer worked there-was on boat-was saved. 

1916             Schooner James Hill             Owned by S. H. Newman of Algoma WI. Became a total wreck on Twin River Point WI where she went ashore in dense fog.  Hall built in Manitowoc WI in 1885; 100 tons, 92 ft long and 23 ft depth. 

1917             Fishing Boats                   Nine fishing boats in Kewaunee WI harbor. Fishing is good.  Trout bring $.23/lb in Chicago. 

1917             Goodrich Stmr.. Nevada          Former steamer Nevada is in Montreal Canada where final negotiations for transfer to the Russian Govt. is complete. They received $750,000 cash. the Nevada used to come into the port of Kewaunee WI. 

1917             Schooner J. V. Taylor           A big 2 Stacker came into Kewaunee WI. harbor. It docked at the old Duvall Dock. She is owned by J. V. Taylor and Dean, who own Carlton store. 

1917             WWI                             Shares were sold to start a shipyard in Kewaunee WI. Posts were driven in the marsh where Kewaunee Engr is  today.  Money was lost as the yards were not built-WWI ended. 

1918             Steam Barge J. C. Crouse        Cleared port of Kewaunee WI.  Cargo 3,00 Bu of oats, 75 tons of hay and flour for W. Seyk Co. of Kewaunee WI. 

1918             Government Equipment            Dredge was brought to Kewaunee WI.  It will be put into winter quarters here. 

1918             Ann Arbor No 5                  Made a remarkable fast trip from Frankfort MI to Kewaunee WI in 4 hours & 25 minutes, a distance of 65 miles. 

1918             Capt. LaPlante                  Brought Govt. Tug Industry into Kewaunee WI. and will depart for Manitowoc. Repairs to boilers at Manitowoc Boiler Works. Tug will come back to Kewaunee for winter. 

1919             Dredge Algoma                   Sunk in Lake Michigan off Genterville-Manitowoc County WI. 

1919             Carferries                      During the past 30 days it was common to see 3 or more ferries entering or leaving Kewaunee WI.  Recently, 2 ferries brought loads of poppy seed for New York. 

1920             Ann Arbor No 4                  Was unable to get into Kewaunee WI because of ice formations about a mile from shore.  Help came from Ann Arbor No 5. 

1921             Kewaunee                        Was one of the first boats on the lakes.  Was sold to Canadian parties. 

1922             Algoma Piers                    $65,000 to replace two harbor piers in Algoma WI. Approved by US War Dept. 

1922             Capt. Jos. Edw. Sticka          From Kewaunee WI. was transferred to Coast Guard at Ordensburg NY.  He will command US Osprey 

1922             Submarine                       Chaser SC412 came into port of Kewaunee WI. while enroute from Detroit MI to Milwaukee WI. She had 22 WI Naval Reservists on board. 

1922             Appropriation                   $30,000 was recommended for improvements for Kewaunee WI harbor. 

1922             Fred H. Besserdich              Along with Hans Hansen, Wm. Lain, Roy Hanna, and Earl Ardin from Kewaunee WI left for Menominee MI where they will be employed for the next who months on harbor improvement work 

1923             Ann Arbor No 4                  Was wrecked night of Feb. 13, 1923 but crew was saved in an awful blinding storm. It had 19 cars of coal and merchandise. There was no control of the ship. It keeled over on its side. Crew climbed to upper deck and saw south breakwater at Frankfort MI. 

1923             William Vollmar                 Master of Dredge Kewaunee of the US Eng. Dept. goes on retired list. He has 43 yr. service with Uncle Sam. 

1923             Stoney Creek                    Is to be stocked with brook trout fingerlings. George C. Fellow received a promise of a shipment from state game and fish. 

1927 July 2      Lucia A. Simpson                Pulled into Kewaunee WI. by Ann Arbor No 7.  Leaked-needed caulking. 

1927             Coast Guard Boats               Boats from Kewaunee WI. and Plum Island with 8 men, left for Vicksburg MS to work with the Red Cross in the flooded area in the Mississippi Valley. 

1928             Govt. Tug Elder                 Tug and steam scow form US Army Corp. of Eng. Kewaunee WI.  Repaired south pier at Algoma WI. 

1928             Fish Tugs                       Nine fish tugs running out of Kewaunee WI this Winter. 

1929             New Carferry Slip               New slip in operation. 

1930             Ann Arbor No 3                  Crashed head -on into south pier.  The pier was demolished. A hole torn into the vessel and government lighthouse damaged at Kewaunee WI. 

1930             Steamer Sheboygan               Old West Ports Steamer, inaugurated the new service of the Goodrich West Ports Steamship Co. to Kewaunee WI., when the vessel tied up at the old West Ports dock here. First vessel at the new Co. to dock in Kewaunee WI. 

1930             Coast Guard Station             Crew of Kewaunee WI. used to row from the station to the south pier by Duvall's Elevator.  They took people to the ferry or to visit the station. They rowed the boat from the stern(Sculling). 

1932             Art Teske                       Sold his interest in the Kewaunee Dock Co. to H.W.. Priebe in Kewaunee WI.  It was where the 'Port of Call" is 

1932             Ole P. Swanson                  One of the officers of the Kewaunee WI Coast Guard Station was transferred to St. Louis DE.  He is placed on a Federal Revenue Vessel which tracks down rum runners in the Atlantic ocean. 

1932             Dredge Kewaunee                 In tow of tug Marinette came into port of Kewaunee WI.. Capt. LaPlante brought it from Manitowoc WI where it got a new boiler. 

1932             Carferry Excursion              Around 100 people from Kewaunee WI and vicinity boarded the Ann Arbor Car Ferry No 7. They enjoyed a lake excursion sponsored by the Ann Arbor Co. 

1932             Lighthouse                      Tender Hyacinth arrived in port of Kewaunee WI and towed away the old barge Riprap which loaded the old steel lighthouse tower. It was shipped to Milwaukee WI. 

1933             US Govt. Dept.                  Crew of 26 men are given steady work at the US Govt. Dept. here at Kewaunee WI. through the winter overhauling machinery & Equipment. 

1933             Ice Harvest                     Trottman & Selner began harvesting the ice drop at East Alaska Lake. It is better quality than the Kewaunee River and is 13 unches thick. 

1933             Sucker                          Fishing Sucker fishing on the Kewaunee River is in full blast. Johnny Hijek made a record catch of over 100 fish. 

1933             US Army Corp. Engrs.            Work on repairs to the old wooden dock east of Kewaunee Grain Co Elevator is under direction of US Corp of Engrs.  Several feet of the dock will be rebuilt below the water and capped with cement. 

1933            New Lookout Tower               Erected for the local Coast Guard Station on the north pier was hooked up with a telephone. 

1933             Lookout Tower-US Coast Guard    The new lookout tower for the Coast Guard on the north pier is proceeding rapidly. Most of the work is being done by the local crew. 

1933             Kewaunee Breakwater             Breakwater is approved by Washington DC at $665,000 

1933             Bosn 3rd Art Anderson           Transferred to Baileys Harbor from Kewaunee. 

1933             Air Plane Tragedy               Mrs. Charles Rennis Jr. of Traverse City MI was the lone survivor of an airplane crash 50 miles off Frankfort MI.  She was rescued by Carferry No 7 and brought to Kewaunee WI. for medical treatment. 

1936             Freezing                        Lake Michigan froze over.  Fish tugs in Algoma WI couldn't move.  Thirty days below Zero.  Twenty Eight below coldest.  Ice Breakers Escanaba and Mackinaw opened harbor 

1936             Barge Kenosha                   Was adrift off of Algoma WI due to gale.  Called Kewaunee Coast Guard.  Surf boat was turned back but barge out ran gale. 

1936             Carferries                      Kept their boilers stoked from being damages.  Cold wave of 1936 Kewaunee WI. harbor had three ferries frozen in  in.  Freed up in March. 

1936 February 21 Lake Michigan                   Capt Roland J. Martin ,Supt. of carferries for Grand Trunk reported lake was solid for 2 weeks not 36 hours as the weather bureau reported.  In the middle of the Lake ice was 14-16 in. thick. Fields shifted and windrows up to 10 ft high were created. 

1937             Steamer Carolina                Old Goodrich steamer came into port of Kewaunee WI. Was cut down by wreckers in Manitowoc WI. She was towed to Sturgeon Bay by Capt. Roen to be converted into a stone barge. 

1938             Carferry                        Pere Marquette operated between Ludington Mich. and Kewaunee WI will be converted into an auto ferry 

1942             Kew.. Ship Bldg. & Eng. Corp.   Real employment at the offices and yard passed the 400 mark. 

1942             Kew.. Ship Bldg. & Eng. Corp.   Laid keels of two wartime freighters being built for US.  Master of Ceremonies was Horace Lamb, Chief Engr. of the Yard. Speakers were Mayor C. L. Duvall, Atty. L. W. Bruemmer, & C. G. Campbell. Ed Gratz spoke for the workmen. 

1943             Second Boat                     Launched at Kew.. Shipbuilding & Eng. Corp. was F-16.  Mrs. D. B. Dana was the sponsor and Eileen Aude was guest of honor. Eileen was first Kewaunee young lady to enlist in the WAVES. 

1943             Kew.. Shipbldg. Corp.           First contract was for 99 ft cargo vessels during 1943-45. There was contract for 45 ft tenders. Also contracts for 176 ft cargo & transport vessels. 

1943             Kew. Engr.. Corp.               First ship was the US army F-15. Betty Bruemmer was sponsor. It was Army blue with colored pennants. Launched amid whistles, HS Band, & large audience. 

1943             River Barge                     Due to inclement weather the largest 108 ft river type barge was in the port of Kewaunee WI. It was built in Sturgeon Bay WI. 

1943             Kew.. Shipbldg & Engr. Co.      Employment now exceeds 400. Six ships are on the way to launching. 

1943             Army Tugs                       Contract for 51 tugs for the Armed Forces has been awarded to Kew, Ship & Eng. Corp. 

1943             Fish Planting                   More than 2 million fish were planted in Kewaunee Co. waters. Two million pike fry in East Alaska lake, 40,000 brown trout in Scarboro, Krok, and Casco creeks. 

1943             Helen Bell                     US Navy Wave Helen Bell 3rd Class Wave Specialist, daughter of John Paska West Kewaunee is taking shooting lessons 

1944             Tug Ludington                  Home port Kewaunee WI.  US Corp. of Eng. hauled scows from England to Normandy Beachhead WI 

1946             Kraus Kraft                    Of Kewaunee WI built one steel fish tug 1946. Built 900 row boats 1947, one steel ferry  1946, built steel ferry 1947,built one wood pleasure Boat 1946, built one pond boat 1946, Lollie Pop was cut in half and made longer 1952, LST was cut up in 1973-74. 

1946             West Shore Mfg.                Started in Kewaunee WI in 1946. It built fiberglass boats from 1946-65. When it was sold the name of their boats was West Shore. Dubar painted the name in them. Lengths were 16 ft depth was 3 ft and had a 72 inch beam. Thickness was 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch' 

1947             Kewaunee Life Saving Station   Closed in 1947.  Began in 1893. 

1947             Pere Marquette                 RR Railroad & Steamship lines came to and end when merged with Chesapeake & Ohio RR.  Combined line was known as C&O. 

1948             Ann Arbor No 3                 Oldest vessel in the Ann Arbor fleet. She observed her 50th anniversary on Lake Michigan traffic lanes. 

1949             Coast Guard Cutter             Woodbine broke ice in North Channel to Naph Sol Terminal Pleides (oil tanker) coming into port of Kewaunee WI. next day 

1950 Dec 10      Fish Tug Sally Lou             Operated by Daubner Bros. out of Kewaunee WI.  Was badly crushed against dock by Ann Arbor No 7. 

1950 Dec 10      Fish Tug Sunbeam               Operated by Drager fish Co. out of Kewaunee WI. was badly damaged during high winds.  It was crushed against dock by Ann Arbor No 7. 

1950             Storm                          So severe, halted carferries across Lake Michigan.  Snow from NE. 

1950 Nov 21      Four Carferries                In port of Kewaunee WI.. at same time. Two ferries in slips and two ferries in basin.  Ann Arbor No 3, No 6, and No. 7 plus Pere Marquette 

1952            A Carferry                      Sounded again at Kewaunee WI. when the Ann Arbor No 5 entered to piers. It was first one into port after a long strike. 

1952            Corp. of Eng. Dredge            Kewaunee was towed here from Sturgeon Bay.  It is going into winter quarters here in Kewaunee WI. It had only half the work this season due to lack of appropriations. 

1952            Kew.. Engr.. Corp.              Awarded contract to build 27 landing craft here in Kewaunee WI. 

1952            No Carferries                   Carferries are coming into port of Kewaunee WI because of strike of licensed officers. Ann Arbor ferries are tied up at Frankfort MI and the C&O at Ludington MI. 

1952            Two New Tugs                    Were added to the Kewaunee Fleet of the Corp. of Engrs.. 

1953            Capt. Palmer Laplante           Retired in 1953. began working in 1916. Operated tug Two Rivers from 1946.  He replaced the tug Marinette. 

1953            Green Bay Water Supply          Green Bay plans to take water from Lake Michigan vis pipeline from Kewaunee WI. at an cost 0f $55,000,000. 

1953            Algoma Boat Club                Is having it's annual racing program. It has several water boats and demonstrations and six races for $350. 

1953            Dip Net Fishermen               Are reaping a harvest from the heaviest run of smelt since the kill-off several years ago. 

1953            Ann Arbor # 3                   Enterprise carried a is of Ann Arbor #3 fast on a shoal close to the breakwater at Manistque MI. Tug John Rowen V released her. Carferry was forced aground by strong winds and high seas. 

1953            Three Scows                     Built by Kew Engr, Corp for the US Army were towed to the east coast by Tug John V. Roen. Scows were taken as far as Buffalo NY. 

1957            Railroad Station                A new station was built on the ferry dock in Kewaunee WI. It was on the south side of the river. Another way was to walk 2 miles via the railroad tracks. Before then all way-bills had to be rowed across the channel or walk 2 miles along the RR tracks. 

1958            Tanker Polaris                  Fractured 3 plates in north channel due to heavy ice in Kewaunee Eng. Corp. 

1958            Oil Tanker Ed. G. Seubert       Pumped 45,000 bbls of petroleum into Naph Sol Refining tank in Kewaunee WI. 

1959            Pleiades                        Oil tanker ran aground on a rock reef 800 yards to break wall Kewaunee WI. 

1959 July       Arthur K. Atkinson              Car Ferry struck concrete crib. Badly damaged at Kewaunee WI harbor 

1959            Ann Arbor No 6                  Rebuilt now Arthur K. Atkinson.  365 ft longer-diesel-higher dock.  Comes into port of Kewaunee WI. 

1959            High Seas                       Completed wrecked all construction work on Kewaunee WI Crib.  It has previously been smashed by car ferry Atkinson 

1959            Coast Guard Cutter              Woodbine broke heavy ice in north channel port of Kewaunee WI. 

1959            Spartan Carferry                Hundreds of Kewaunee people welcomed the C&O new carferry Spartan which visited here on her trial run.  She came from Sturgoen Bay WI where she was built at Christy Yards.

1960            Fish Tug Buccanneer             Off Kewaunee WI collided with tanker Clark of Milwaukee WI 8 miles south of here 

1961            The Spartan (carferry)          Was loaded with sugar beet pulp. It had 80,000 fifty pound bags in 222 box cars. 

1962            Lake Michigan                   Is 8 inches below the level of last year according to Monthly Bulletin of US Army Corp. of Eng. 

1962            Winter                          In Kewaunee WI is when ice ridges begin to form on the shore of Lake Michigan. Zero weather this December gave it a good start. 

1962 December   Ann Arbor Atkinson              Flagship Arthur K. Atkinson crossed Lake Mich. in a frigid gale. It had an arctic look when it docked in Kewaunee WI. 

1962            Lifeguard                       Allan Slack, son of M&M Mansel Slack saved the life of a Green Bay WI. man while on duty as Lifeguard at the Kewaunee Beach. 

1963            Carferries in Fog               Temperature reached 20 below and Wabash & Ann Arbor ferries were invisible in the mist created until they get just outside the pierhead at Kewaunee WI. 

1963            Lake Water Levels               Water levels on Lake Michigan & Huron continue to be about 2 ft below the average long term average. 

1963            US Corp. of Engrs. Dredge       Kewaunee is completing several weeks project at Two Rivers. She will be towed to Green Bay to begin work there. 

1963            Kewaunee Life Guard             Allan Slack, Kewaunee Life Guard, received the highest award of the American Red Cross as a result of saving the life of a bather at the Kewaunee Beach. 

1965            Kew. Engr. Corp.                This facility burned down and was rebuilt. It was formerly Kew. Shipbldg. & Engr. Corp., the shipbuilding company which built over 80 ships during W.W.II. The  Pueblo was built her. 

1966 December   US Army Corp.                   Barge Slipped mooring during gale.  Drifted into Lake Michigan. Wild ride on lake before located. 

1968 Jan 23     Pueblo                          Built by Kewaunee Shipbuilding and Eng. Corp. Kewaunee WI.  As FP344, was launched April 6 1944.  Captured by North Korea. Model in Kew. Co. Museum. 

1968            The Kew Shipbuilding & Engr Corp Of Kewaunee WI built 80 different vessels in W.W.II. Tugs and landing craft to 176 ft supply ships.  Shipyards began in 1941-most famous was F P344 the Pubelo, captured by N. Korea. 

1968            Pueblo Model                    Located in Kewaunee Co. Museum is a model of the Pueblo built here and captured by the North Koreans in the 1960's. 

1969            Car Ferry Viking                Found itself anchored to another anchor in Kewaunee WI when lifted the anchor belonged to another car ferry. 

1969            Ron Leist                       An Algoma WI policeman lost his life by trying to save a person drowning in Algoma Harbor On Oct. 9. 

1969            Tanker Mobile Chicago           Lake Michigan put its wintry brand on the Tanker Mobile Chicago on its trip to Kewaunee WI. At Naph Sol Refining dock crewmen chopped away the ice. Pilot house crew had to get out through a rear door. It was 10 below Zero. 

1971            Coast Guard Boat                Towed the yacht Trade Winds into Kewaunee WI harbor . Disabled by high seas. 

1972            Old Quarter Boat                Sheboygan was torn up at US Army Corp. of Eng. Yard in Kewaunee WI and hauled to dump. 

1972            Rusty Sandsucker                American joints the hulls of the freighters Saskatoon and Alfred Krupp at moorings in the harbor basin(north)port of Kewaunee WI. 

1972            Ann Arbor                       Ann Arbor RR Co. has begun action to abandon its service across Lake Mich., which includes the Port of Kewaunee WI. 

1972            New Dock Space                  City of Kewaunee WI built new docks during the winter of 1973. 36 its were built of treated pine and bottoms of 8" foam. Money from Federal grant. 

1973            Barge Alfred Krupp              At peak of big storm the barge Alfred Krupp broke from its moorings in the north harbor coming to rest against the Dredge Kewaunee and some scows. 

1973            Carferry Road Damage            Damage of carferry road estimated at $ 100,000. Looking for Federal Aid. 

1973            Taurus                          Has been towed to Kewaunee WI from Manitowoc to be scrapped. 

1973            Heavy Rain storm                Storm sent Kewaunee River over its banks flooding bridge approaches. Fishermans point and the ramp parking area was also flooded. 

1973            C&O City of Saginaw             Ferry was towed past Kewaunee WI. enroute to Spain. It will be scrapped because it was heavily damaged in a fire. 

1973            Two Casco Boys Saved            Four Eagle Scouts of Casco were instrumental in saving 2 Casco boys from drowning in the Kewaunee River. A raft capsized. Scouts were Perry Drossart, Randy Erickson, Jos. & Dan Majeski.  Rescued were Randy Dart and Mick Fica 

1977            Dipper Dredge Kewaunee          Left for Duluth MN towed by tug Ludington from Kewaunee WI to the scrap heap.  Built in 1916. Had original machinery.  Wood hull replaced with steel. 

1978            Replica of Santa Maria          Came into port of Algoma WI. She had sails plus a diesel engine.  From here she went down the Mississippi River where she caught on fire and burned up. 

1978            Kew. Engr. Corp.                Built kingposts for Peterson Bldrs of Sturgeon Bay WI. They were 150 tons each and were used to lift heavy equipment on & off boats to a boat shipped to St. Bay by tug and barge. 

1979            Photinia                        Battered British cargo freighter was towed into port of Kewaunee WI to be cut up 

1979            Selvick Marine                  Brought another ship into Kewaunee WI. It is moored abreast the Photinia. It is a cement barge brought her for winter lay-up. 

1980            Vessels                         There were 22 sailboats in the port of Kewaunee WI.  They were in a race cruise from Racine WI to Sturgeon Bay WI. 

1980 Aug 13     Kewaunee WI.                    Harbor had an unusual sight Wednesday. there was an Chinese Junk here-Dragon Lady. 

1981            Coast Guard                     Automated the Kewaunee WI. lighthouse, converting it from what was a four man station. 

1981            Big Storm                       Due to high winds on Lake Mich., Luedtke's tug and barge, Arthur K. Atkinson, and Viking found shelter in the port of Kewaunee WI. 

1981            Kewaunee River Bridge           Opened to let McMullen & Pitz to take a tug and scow up river to repair RR bridge. 

1981            Carferry City of Milwaukee      Came into port of Kewaunee WI. She got stuck in mud and took 1 hour to free her so she  could take on freight and passengers for another trip. 

1981            Harbor Park                     Funding for Harbor Park was obtained from Federal sources.  Building of dock wall bumpers for pleasure crafts to use in tying up, landscaping and paving paerjing lot was dons in 1982. Park overlooks Kewaunee WI Harbor Basin. 

1982 Aug 2      Hains                           Dredge came to Kewaunee WI to dredge harbor. 

1982            Government                      Disposal Area In Kewaunee WI. was built by Luedtke Const....  It was started in 1981 and finished in 1982 

1982            Car Ferry                       Service to Kewaunee WI. came to a standstill with striking of railroad employees. 

1982            Boston Whaling Boat             A 21 ft Whaler ran into the north breakwater here. It was very foggy and visibility was zero. It was owned by Warren Swintosky of Kewaunee WI. 

1982            Ludington                       Tug of US Army Corp. of Engrs. left dock to rescue a barge in trouble between piers. Barge was secured tot he south pier but rough seas & wind caused the line to let go. 

1982 March 3    Explosion at                    Basin Smoke followed an explosion when an oil fuel storage tank in the hull of the British freighter Photinia was being cut up. 

1983 July 1     Mich.-WI Transportation Co.     Newly formed company will begin operations of the ferry Midland between Ludington MI and Kewaunee WI. 

1983            Auto Loading Ramp               Was used for the first time at Kewaunee WI May 27, 1983. It was brought here from Manitowoc WI. It worked with the ferry Midland who has an upper deck for cars. 

1983            MI-WI Transportation            Bought the Midland and the Badger. The Chesapeake and Ohio RR sold them for $1.00. The Spartan was also included. 

1983            Michigan Ferry Service          Group of investors plan to take over operation of Lake Michigan Ferry Service. 

1983            Barge Load Lost                 A logging truck, loader, and logs were lost off a barge in Green Bay waters.  Company was using barge to transport logs from Chambers Island to Algoma WI on trucks and then hauled to the Lumber Co.
1984   18 Foot Boat 

1984            US Army Corp. of Engrs..        Hired Selvik Marie from Sturgeon Bay WI to dredge Kewaunee WI harbor. Approximately 12,000 yards of material will be removed. 

1984            Arthur K. Atkinson              Selvik tugs brought carferry Arthur K. Atkinson into port of Kewaunee WI. It was Ann Arbor NO 6. It is docked at the Kewaunee Engr.. Corp. 

1985            New Bridge                      New bridge across Kewaunee River was built in 1985. Old one down in 1986 

1985            Charter Boat Starship Enterprise   Owner Pat Dolin had considerable damage. Filled gas engine back fired and started blaze in Kewaunee WI. harbor. 

1985            Kew.. Engr. Corp.               Lifted a 31 ft cabin cruiser which sank in the Kewaunee WI river. It had a hose left running which weighted the boat down. Damage on the starboard side. Named Lucky Rose. 

1985            Fifth Bridge                    Cuts across Svoboda's property and exits on the highway at Toms Sport Shop. North approach is west of Van's cheese & Water Front Bar. 

1985            New Bridge                      New bridge over the Kewaunee River enlarged the harbor basin, making 112 slip marina, and harbor park overlooking harbor and improved boat landings. 

1986            Shilinda                        Three crew members and Six passengers were treated after floating in 50 degree weather in Lake Mich. Their boat, Shilinda, caught fire 3 miles north of Algoma WI. They were saved by 2 private craft. Fire put out-craft saved. Smoke visible for 10 miles. 

1986 October    Lake Michigan Level's           High water of 580.65 ft eroded beaches, bluffs, flooded neighborhoods, & destroyed shoreline homes. Damage in Kewaunee County estimated at $300,000. 

1987            Bo Mar Cruises                  Brought excursion boat Chippewa from Sturgeon Bay WI to port of Kewaunee WI.  It will have long one hour cruises on Lake Michigan. 

1987            Luedtke Construction            Of Frankfort MI is working on the pier in Kewaunee WI harbor.  It is potting rubble to replace the old pier. Old Pier was recapped in 1920. 25,000 tons of stone is needed. 

1987            Tug Ludington                   Tug of Kewaunee WI. is doing heavy work towing the large dredge Parainso from Manitowoc WI to Detroit MI. 

1987            Storm                           The barge and tug of Selvik Marine of Sturgeon Bay WI ran into the dock behind Hamachek Machine of Kewaunee WI. Tug and barge maneuvered out of situation & continued on its journey on Lake Mich. 

1987            Selvick Tug                     Struck sixth pier at the entrance to the channel.  Tug boat operator contended that the accident was caused by the wheel wash from a near-by car ferry.  Investigation found no evidence of this. 

1988            Andrie Inc.                     Firm of Muskegon MI is dredging the Kewaunee WI channel. Carferry personnel told city council water levels are making it difficult for them to enter the harbor. 

1988            Carferry Business               Passenger & vehicle traffic increased 16-19 percent during the year. 

1989            Green Bay & Western             RR of Green Bay WI. appreciative of the work done by the Kew.. Eng. Corp. of Kewaunee WI in repairing the dock immediately damaged by there carferry Badger. 

1989            Selvick Marine                  Sturgeon Bay Co. dredged Kewaunee WI harbor to 7 ft. It was for the 150 slips for pleasure boats 

1990 Nov 16     Badger                          Last carferry from Kewaunee WI. 

1990 Dec 4      Arthur K. Atkinson              Ferry at Kewaunee WI turned around in harbor during a storm.  It was facing west before it turned facing north.  It broke it's cables. 

1990            Carferry Midland                Travels up to 18 mph. She carries 500 passengers,23 RR cars, & 50 autos. Air-conditioned, radar, radio, direction finders, ship to shore phones, LORAN, & watertight bulkheads. 

1990            RR Depot                        New freight office was built on North side of Harbor by the ferry slips. It opened in 1957 and closed in 1990. 

1992 Jan 14     A Fish Tug                      In Kewaunee WI broke loose. Ran out of the harbor into Lake Michigan and turned south.  Ran aground at the old fireman's park. 

1992            The Corp. of Engr.              Had equipment working in the port of Kewaunee WI. Rowen Salvage Co. of Sturgeon Bay WI did the dredging-they dredged the harbor to 21 ft. 

1992            Kew. Mfg. Co.                   One of the remaining buildings of the old Kew. Mfg. Co. burned down. At one time, it was largest industry in Kewaunee WI. 

1993            New Ahnapee River Bridge        New bridge is 77 ft long steel. It has a wooden deck and rails. Was built in Alexandria MN and installed Feb. 17 
1993.           With this bridge the Ahnapee trail between Kewaunee & Door Co. will continue. 

1993            Arthur K. Atkinson              During height of storm a cable broke on old carferry allowing it to move about harbor. Arrangements were made to anchor it with heavy cables. 

1993            S. S. Badger                    Sustained a gash in her hull when it scrapes rocks at the bottom of the harbor entrance at Ludington MI.  It had only 40 passengers and 60 crewmen. Dense fog caused the accident. The Badger use to come into Kewaunee. 

1997 June       William Flaherty                Makes boats in bottles.  He lives in Kewaunee WI.
