After the Civil War a group of veterans of Belgian nationality brought back with them a new religion to Kewaunee county. Called Spiritualism, this sect involved themselves in performances of bringing back the dead with seances. The leader of this sect was Desire LaCourt who with the "minister", Frank Jaque, turned an old house into a church. To this day no one is really sure what happened in that house. About fifty years ago the church was torn down and the sect ceased to hold services. One reason was that a gentleman of the same sect, who resided in Door county, cut his hand off to test the powers of the cult; instead he died. It is interesting to note that a sect such as the Spiritualists who believed in the infinite would even have a cemetery which, of course, is finite.
