| Green County was created 8 Dec 1836 from Iowa County, as a territorial county. Green County is named after Nathanael Greene, quartermaster general and commander of the southern campaign during the Revolutionary War. Today, Green County is known for its green rolling hills, highly productive farmland, and the small town flavor of its communities. The county seat is Monroe. There is no known history of courthouse disasters in Green County, so any records that were filed should be available at the Monroe County Courthouse: Statewide registration for births and deaths began in 1907, however, general compliance years* are unknown.
