    The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire opened as the State Normal School at Eau Claire with 22 faculty members and 159 students in 1916, the institution evolved into a State Teachers College in 1927, the Wisconsin State College at Eau Claire in 1951 and attained university status in 1964. In 1971 the university, with other state-supported higher learning institutions, became a full partner in the new UW System.

  • University of Wisconsin, Platteville (founded in 1839)

    Even before Wisconsin achieved statehood in 1848, Platteville was attracting students from eight states to an institution of higher education. The Platteville Academy was chartered by the Wisconsin Territorial Council in 1839. In 1842, it occupied a building on the corner of Bonson and Cedar Streets, �erected for the purpose of accommodating scholars of both sexes.
