The Assembly consists of 100 members. They are chosen biennially andreceive $500 for their service during the term. The Speaker Is chosenby the members and receives an additional $500 for his services asSpeaker. The Assembly of 1901 contains 82 Republicans and 18Democrats.

LAFAYETTE M. STURDEVANT (Rep.), of Neillsville, was born Sept. 17,1856, in Chandler's Valley, Pa. He came to Wisconsin in 1865 andsettled in the town of Pine Valley, Clark county. He grew to manhoodupon the farm and was educated in the schools of his county. By strictapplication to his studies he was able to se-cure a certificate toteach, and from 1872 to 1878 taught school and studied law, and wasadmitted to the bar in 1878. He held the office of district attorneyof his county four years, 1884, 1885, 1890 and 1891, and was chairmanof the Clark county Republican committee from 1894 to 1898. He waselected to the assembly from Clark county in 1898, and re-elected in1900 by 3,789 votes to 1,213 for Henry S. Mulvey (Dem.), and 129 forE. G. Vischer (Pro.).
