A Brief History

Wisconsin became a state in 1848, at that time Bayfield County was part of LaPointe County. On May 1, 1866, the county was renamed Bayfield County in honor of Lieut. Henry R.T. Bayfield, of the British Navy, who made the first survey of Lake Superior from 1823-1825. In 1858, the county seat was moved to Bayfield from the Village of LaPointe, and in 1892 to the City of Washburn where it remains today.
