Cumberland Golf Course
The
Cumberland
Country Club was founded about 1925. The Parent
Organization was the Cumberland Land and Improvement

Clock.
The course
was planned and laid out by Tom Vardon
who was "pro" at the White Bear Country Club, White Bear, Minnesota. (We
might stand correction on Mr. Vardon's first name.) The basic land preparation
and ground work was done by Hanson and Smith
Transfer of Cumberland; owned and operated
by Alfred Hanson
and Fred Smith.
The first grounds keeper
as we
remember was John Jessup.
(This might also stand for correction.) Later Theodore
and Harry Hedke took care of the grounds.
Memory seem to indicate that the course was first played with only seven
holes completed and later expanded to the full nine holes.
The Cumberland
Country Club was operated by the parent company until the year 1942; at
this time activity was suspended because of World War II and help was not
available to continue the operation. In October of 1945 the operation was
sold to Arthur E. and Lois Brandt
who operated it until 1955. The Brandt's sold the operation to Wilber
A. and Helen Lau; they
operated
the course until January 1960. The Lau's sold the operation to Earl
H. and Patricia Meyer, who operated the course
until April 1968.
At this
time the operation was taken over by the City of Cumberland and was known
as the Cumberland Golf Club, Inc.,
and was financed by revenue bonds. A limited amount of improvements were
made by each of the owners; this was limited by the revenue which was not
exorbitant. Many improvements have now been made and the operation has
been well accepted by our locals as well as visitors and vacationers. A
new club house was started in October 1968 and was put in use May 1969.
The club house is a very attractive structure and is very serviceable in
every respect.
