Baptist Church

A Baptist Church was organized in Cumberland on January 29, 1882, with Elder A. Gibson from New Richmond as pastor. There were 10 members and the church continued until March, 1884, when he died.

In June of 1890, the church was reorganized with Reverend W.H. Barker as pastor. The church incorporated in July of 1890. In April of 1891, Reverend E.D. Bennett took over the pastorate. At that time there were 49 members. The meetings were held in the Good Templar's Hall until the Nice Edifice Church was built. Through the loss of members through deaths and people
moving away the church was unable to keep their property which was sold to Ed Brand who used it as a garage for his hotel business.

The Cumberland Baptist Church first began when a group of people began meeting starting on June 3, 1956. Their first meeting place was a home and they also used the basement of the Toftness Clinic and later on the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Clarence Woods from Bethel Seminary came on Sundays to hold services.

It was on September 8, 1858, that the church was officially organized and became a member of the Baptist General Conference. The 13 charter members were Paul Johnson, Hazel Johnson, Paulette Johnson, Annette Johnson, Roy Davis, Lucille Davis, John Walton, Ruth Walton, Steve Walton, Alice Larson, George Larson, Don Marske, and Wilma Cimfl.

The first full-time pastor was Reverend Gary Joslin who served the church until 1963. In 1963, Reverend Lowell Gardner took over the pastorate followed by William Harper in 1967, Reverend Jess Watson in 1968, and Reverend Roland Christenson, the present pastor, in June of 1973.

In 1963, the congregation purchased the old First Lutheran Church building and in February of 1968 they purchased the First Lutheran Parsonage. Since then, the interior of the church has been extensively remodeled and in 1969, an organ was purchased.

The present membership is 60 with a Sunday School enrollment of 84. The present officers of the church are: Albert Miller-Chairman, Byron Vocelka-Vice Chairman, Arlene Vocelka-clerk, Elaine Miller-Treasurer and Ruth Walton-Sunday School Superintendent.
